I have heard the term "deep south" all my life but I have never seen it defined. I think of it as being a put-down term. Perhaps I am wrong.

I do not consider Virginia and NC part of the true south. They are borderline like Oklahoma and Kentucky. States that touch the gulf plus South Carolina Georgia and Tennessee are the south.
