Can we change it up the South’s Oldest Rivalry?

There was a very long time when Auburn would almost always win in Athens and UGA would win some of the games in Jordan Hare. This happened even when the home team was thought to be better. It was maddening.

Pretty interesting to think about the games when Auburn had John Heisman and UGA had Pop Warner.
They were tied one a piece in the series.

I wonder where AU/UF would rank if we kept playing annually after 2002.

Vandy been playing football longer than any school in the South.
Vandy started up in 1890 yes, but it was actually Kentucky that started it all in terms of future SEC teams. They played their first game a decade earlier in 1880… then I think they took a rather lengthy hiatus before starting again for good in the 1890s.

The challenge our Florida is they got about a 15-year late start on most other programs…not starting up until 1906.
We’ve played 84 times with just four of those coming since the series halted in 2002. Had it never stopped, we’d be 113 meetings this year.

We should.
North Carolina and Virginia call their rivalry that. They used to have one more meeting than us, but because we doubled up and played in the 2017 SEC Championship Game, we pulled even in meetings.
Our first game was also earlier than their’s.
AU-UGA first played in February 1892
UNC-UVA first played in October 1892
So we have the same number of meetings and our rivalry started before theirs. We should 100% change the rivalry’s name to just “The South’s Oldest Rivalry.”

Yes fascinating. I drove by the old stadium in Jackson, MS a couple of weeks ago and tried to imagine what it was like the few times Auburn played Ole Miss in that stadium back in the day. I imagine it was a bit safer back then at least.
Much. The last game we played down there was against VMI. Good riddance to that place.

FIFY
130 - East Alabama Male College VS Georgia.
A lot of gayness on the plains at that time
