Danny Etling (New LSU QB) Breakdown for Non-LSU peeps

Etling is a "serviceable" QB, who if he stays within his limitations, may be able to salvage this season, and perhaps even be the missing cog for a really good season. He is not Brett Favre or John Elway or anyone like that.
Positives:
The most important thing, is his pocket-awareness. In his game last weekend, he did a really good job of coolly moving around in the pocket away from incoming pressure, and then delivering, for the most part, clean, on-target passes. When completely flushed out of the pocket, he showed good wheels, running for good gains, including a score. Next most important was his ability to progress through the check-downs, and throw to the open receiver.
These two things (the lack thereof) are what drove us crazy with B Harris.
Negatives:
Does not have the arm strength of Harris or as much top end speed or quickness as Harris does.
Synopsis:
When watching him play, I thought of Matt Mauck. I hope he fares as well as Matt did =)

Look, all LSU needs is a QB with the label of "not retarded" and y'all will be fine. A breakdown is not necessary.

Negatives: Could not win the starting QB position at Purdue

Get that "serviceable" outta here... You aren't fooling us. LF, may or may not play, but lsu will have a heisman contender on the field Saturday night.

He steps up into the pocket. I haven't seen an LSU QB do that in a while.

He did show some potential against an FCS team and good for him, though his stats were pretty pedestrian.
Remember this though.... if Jennings had not transferred to ULL, he would likely have been the sub for Harris against Jax State. That would mean Etling would probably not be on the field against MS, which means in practice he was third behind Harris and Jennings. Let that sink in a moment.
Wish him well, but wanted to introduce a cautionary note. It is better to be pleasantly surprised when modest expectations are exceeded.

He was the starter and looked great at times, but then he was benched cause he started sucking and transferred to an SEC school.... Sounds pretty similar, huh?

If you consider Oklahoma and Purdue similar football programs and Baker Mayfield and whoever the frick replaced Etsiah at Purdue similar quarterbacks, then absolutely.

OU is not Purude and Mayfield finished 5th in the Heisman voting. Its not even a little the same.
Edit: Not quick enough.

What's going to happen if he blows it this weekend? Will Harris become the savior again?

Jacksonville State.
What y'all are failing to realize is we've had shitty QB play even against these teams in the past. Etling didn't light shite up Saturday by any means but he showed more QB ability in a few series than Harris has shown in 2-1/2 years. I like that State is his next game. It's a step up in competition and we'll get a much better feel of his skillset.
