I've been seeing more and more rant talk about how Dan Mullen is second best in SEC, a near "top tier" coach, and I am just not understanding it.

One 10 win season with Dak at the helm, a bunch of mediocre (by the rants standards) seasons before and after that. Why is he all of a sudden an attractive head coach? Has had 4+ loses in every season except 2014 with a blistering .588 winning percentage.

That's how low expectations are there. You can suck and people think you're great

Mullen a a good coach and I believe he would do quite well coaching at other schools. He just can't recruit the talent to compete in the SEC west.

But to my memory, he has done better than everyone else who has coach State recently.

When Coach O gets done at LSU you're gonna wish Mullen was there with his maroon binder.

No offense to State but how do you expect him to pull in recruits? He's a good coach. You don't know shite about football.

That's pretty incredible at Mississippi freaking State. Not only does he have several good seasons (for them), under Mullen they are consistent. They EXPECT to get to bowl games now.

Hell, he had them ranked #1 a couple years ago. I'm not sure if he's second-best, but look at who is coaching in the SEC right now. Dan Mullen is definitely up there.

All SECW schools are not equal..... a 10 win season at State and a 10 win season at Alabama are two different things

Six straight winning seasons, three years with 9+ wins, and a .588 win percentage at a program that has a program-long .490 win percentage?

Pretty good run. Even had them #1 for a couple weeks. If he can do that at MSU, imagine if he had top 5/10 talent. He's definitely a goofy fricker, but the guy can coach.

This. Mississippi State is the hardest school to recruit to in one of the two toughest divisions in all of college football. He has done more with less over the past several seasons than any coach in this league.

Only coach to give Dak a chance at QB, and also developed him. Can't he get credit for that?

What he's done at MSU is impressive.

ETA: If not Mullen, then who? SEC coaches aren't impressive at the moment.

THIS

Other than Saban and Alabama, Mississippi State has the longest active bowl streak of any SEC school.

ETA: LSU has a longer active bowl streak. Just kinda weird knowing that and you fired your coach.

Well, most of that has to do with how bad it is after Saban

He's had MS St ranked at some point during the season 5 out of 8 years. He's taken MS St to 7 consecutive bowl games. He's won 8+ games, at MS St, 4 out of 8 years.

At MS St.

I'd venture to say that's about as impressive as what James Franklin did during his stint at Vandy, being in the East and all.

Bold move for an LSU fan to point towards head coaching record as a sign a HC is bad.

He has also shown he can find and develop a QB. I think Nick Fitzgerald is going to be hell to deal with over the next couple of seasons.

He did lead the SEC in total yards this year. Pretty good for a TE.

60-42 is pretty fricking good when he's at Mississippi State competing in the best division in football
