He definitely can make a strong case for it. That said, being a great play-caller or coordinator is not the same as being a great head coach. Muschamp was at one point considered one of the greatest defensive masterminds in the entire country, but he crashed and burned at UF. Dabo Swinney had never called a play at the collegiate level, as he was just a WR coach, but he got the promotion to HC and as shown to be an excellent CEO-type head coach. He makes great choices for his coaching and support staffs and can motivate his players to play their asses off for him. It'll all come down to how well he transitions into being THE man, and how much a of a leash UT/Fulmer gives him.

His game plan vs Uf in 2014 automatically destroys this narrative

Jimmys and Joes.

The way you have it sounds like a hookers business plan for long term success.

Our Defense was much more organized and prepared under Pruitt. Substitutions were much more fluid. Kirby was like a Chinese fire drill getting the players on and off the field. Half the time they were not even looking when the ball was snapped because they were looking at him gyrating and jumping around on the sidelines trying to get the signals in. Pruitt is a huge loss for us no doubt.

I wonder if this "current SEC coach" watched the 2014 and 2015 Florida/Georgia games.

“To me, Jeremy is the best defensive mind in the SEC,” said the coach, who is still in the SEC.

That’s strong praise, especially with Alabama’s Nick Saban – Pruitt’s most recent boss – considered a defensive guru and another Saban protégé, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, known for his defensive prowess as well. Still, Pruitt can more than hold his own compared to the two.

“He’s better than Nick and Kirby,” the coach said.

You know how we know the piece is BS?

Because Muschamp wasn't mentioned ... and no coach attempting to correlate 'coaches and defense' as hard as this anonymous cat was trying to do ... if he were real he would not have omitted Muschamp.

We won our division and the SEC, unlike someone who wil remain nameless. We also didn’t back our way into the playoffs.

As for the article, the coach is a complete idiot and Pruitt is a buffoon.

Neither did Pruitt's defense in 2016. So your point is moot.

He is an excellent defensive mind, no doubt. A little testy to get along with. he expects maximum effort and will run some players off his first year if he does not get that effort. from that standpoint, the first year might be a little rocky. But I think he will be very successful at Tennessee if he can get along with his coaching staff and the administration.

I still think UT should have hired Mike Leach.

I think he's a better DC than Kirby. I don't know which will be the better HC.

75% chance this is Coach O. As such, I won't put too much stock into his evaluation.

I have my money on Fulmer. Although the post on here calls the source a current SEC coach, the article dances around that gingerly.

It calls him a coach with a long-time SEC history and says he's still in the SEC. If it was a current SEC coach the article is likely going to flat out say that. There's no reason to dance around it like the article does.

Whoever it is has to know Pruitt decently well because he calls him by his first name, he has to be familiar with the entire roster and what they have because he discusses it, he has to be familiar with what was going on at Tennessee under Butch because he references the issues they had, they have to support Butch getting fired because they basically come out and say it by noting that you're fifth year should be your best year as a coach, no excuses, and they have to dislike Bama and Georgia because that's who they throw shade at by naming Saban and Smart.

That article screams a continuation of the Butch Jones PR campaign. Only this time they had their AD interviewed to make Pruitt sound great under the guise of an SEC coach with long time experience who is still in the conference...

He is an elite defensive coach, proved that everywhere he's been.

We will see if that translates to elite head coach. He's got a tough row to how but given how much he's making and the fact he's coaching the stinking vols it's hard to feel any sympathy.

Good detective work. Year 5 for fulmer was 1998?
