Could Manziel have turned out better?

I think most people knew that he was a disaster waiting to happen coming out of A&M and the Browns were foolhardy to take him in the first round; but if he had a coaching staff at A&M that would've kept his ego in check and forced him to adjust his mechanics, could it have turned out better? He was never going to be a pocket passer, but he constantly bailed from clean pockets, had terrible mechanics and even threw it up for grabs a good bit. Basically he got away with so many bad habits in college and let his fame consume him off the field. Sumlin and co were not up to the task of reforming of helping him grow as a QB or instill self-discipline.
I think Jamarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf are close parallels to him. Great breakdown of his issues here. Not trying to troll btw I really wanted him to succeed

His ego wasn’t the problem. His substance use issues were.

Ego was certainly part of it. He thought he was above falling victim to substance abuse. No one is.

Welcome to College Station, he should have lived in Bryan.

shite, I can't remember the specifics of all the Browns draft busts

His QB mechanics/style etc were maybe 10% of the problem and 90% or more was his head and attitude. He absolutely could have been a decent pro QB if he wanted to and had all the tools. I’m no Sumlin fan but he would have just driven him off if he took a harder line on him. At some point there is responsibility on the player to want to improve and evolve his game

Good point on accountability, but I think if you watch the video you'd come to the conclusion his style of play was more like 40% of the problem. He had to learn to go through progressions to at least some extent instead of scrambling immediately; Vick had similar problems. But like you say, there had to have been a "want-to" on his part to change that as well

Lets hope there's no false hope for having football this fall!

Manziel himself was the problem so no. You can't help someone who doesn't want help.

No, the dude was talented and athletic but didn’t have the brain or grit to push himself to the next level.

I don't blame Manziel's problems on Kevin Sumlin, Kliff Kingsbury or Jake Spavital.
Manziel was the kind of player who will go to practice and maybe watch an hour of video per week of the opposing defense, and that's it. He wasn't a student of the game. Not like these NFL QBs who watch hours of video each day trying to solve opposing defenses. He also had a lack of maturity.
If his intended receiver was not open, then he was going to freelance. He had some good WRs who knew when to break off their routes and work the scramble drill. This is a lot of fun to watch, but you can't run an NFL offense that way.
Mike Evans bailed out Manziel quite a few times. Will be interesting to see how he and Tom Brady mesh in Tampa Bay.

Jamarcus would tell coaches he watched a DVD of game film (which happened to be blank)

I thought he was bi-polar. He had issues for sure.

All predicated by a lousy job of raising him by his parents. As long as he was lighting it up on Friday night any and bad behavior was excused by them and the entire town.

Manziel was a very good scamper college qb.
He didn't translate to the pros. Many others didn't either.
He's not the only one.

Manziel has said he’s bipolar. That probably derailed his career more than anything.

Kevin Sumlin bears a lot of responsibility for Manziels problems. He should have suspended Manziel multiple times for his actions at A&M. That may or may not have ultimately stopped Manziel from imploding but it would have put the focus on Manziel's detestable character and nonexistent integrity long before he was drafted in the NFL. JM was and is a POS. It should have been exposed and the consequences realized much earlier in his career.
