If the BCS still existed in 2017, Smart would still have the same number of national championship appearances: 0.

How do you know this? UGA just beat the number 2 or 3 team in the nation. You have no clue what the BCS would’ve done. Feel free to link anything backing that claim up. You also haven’t addressed the difference in record against top 10 opponents.

Because someone still runs the formula used by the BCS for kicks and giggles and had Clemson and Oklahoma in the championship game back in 2017.

lol the BCS actually had UGA playing Clemson for the natty in 2017. Thanks for putting to bed the argument that the playoffs benefitted Smart over Richt.

2001-2005 Mark Richt was widely acknowledged to be a top 5-10 coach in college football

Kirby even has it easier than Richt did due to the advent of the playoffs and the enhanced reputation of the SEC.

Smart would likelyhave 3 straight playoff appearances if he had it as easy as Richt did.

Comparing Kirby Smart and Mark Richt at similar points in their tenure at Georgia

It's funny to me that rivals constantly bring this up as if it's an insult, it couldn't be farther from one. Early Richt was one of the hottest up and coming coaches in America. Richt was fired for his last ~7 years of his resume, not the first few. It's such an easy concept to understand yet is lost on everyone that isn't a UGA fan. The only real issue our program has right now is not being able ot beat alabama, which every program in america except clemson has the same problem as well. Kirby isn't going ot get fired for not beating alabama.

quote:

I'm sure questions will then start to arise as to whether or not Smart can get the Bulldogs over that final hump

waht coach with any semblance of a brain cell would come to UGA if we fire kirby for not beating alabama? "hey prospective candidate. Youc an whip the shite out of all our traiditonal rivals, recruit top 3 nationally every year, mollywhop the rest of the division and win the east every year, finish top 5 pretty much yearly and have yourself in playoff conention in november every year, BUT...if you lose to alabam you're fired". Who would accept that deal?

Le'ts also look at the big team standing in our way these years you want to reference. 19 LSU, 18 bama, and 20 bama are LIGHT YEARS more difficult of a road block than 03 LSU and 04 AU.

Kirby is recruiting at a MUCH higher level than Richt... I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Saban weren't in the SEC then Kirby would have won a national championship already..

To the UGA fans

1) Kirby is a heck of a recruiter. UGA has always had talent, but did Richt recruit to nearly the same level?

2) what was the state of the SEC east. I dont remember the exact time frame of Richts first 5 yrs but UF had Urban at some point around there.

Mark Richt -1.9

Lol...Mark Richt didn't go 3-1 against Florida his first 4 tries, either.

Don’t have a dog in the fight and just trying to be objective I don’t think Georgia needs to push the panic button. Smart has brought in good talent( lost one in Fields). Yeah he’s made some mistakes but guy is only what 45? Let’s see how he is in four years. If he is still a playoff contender every year then Georgia fans should be happy. If not well AD will have a tough choice.

It could be worse. They could be paying him 75 Million to win 7 games a year.

UGA needs a generational talent to win a title. Kirby ran that generational talent off and he now leads tOSU. Kirby is a better recruiter than Mark but Mark was a better head coach.

Neither has the winning instincts to win a title.

Different Florida. I hate taking up for UGA fans, but at a point there is nothing wrong with demanding more. These guys are paid way to much to not produce. If they want more flexibility on production, then accept the job at a 90% reduction of his current salary.

Except that generational talent could not lead OSU to the same level that Fromm led UGA. You are trying hard today, keep at it.

Doesn’t Fromm have a better playoff record than Fields?

No one cares.

Any argument that implies that Fromm is a better football player than Fields is seriously misguided.

Kirby would have one, maybe two if he didn’t have to compete against Saban.

Richt blew his best shot those early years to Ron Zook

Bama has built themselves into a super team, it takes an anomaly to beat them.

I would not read so much into this loss....
