I had not heard this, what was the issue?

The official reason was losing repeatedly to the "big 4" at the time (Auburn, UF, Tennessee and GT... particularly GT).

The real reason was that Donnan was a jerk to boosters and to UGA media (like Loran Smith and Larry Munson). He basically sucked horribly at the relationship part of being a head coach. He also did some stuff with recruiting involving "Georgia Girls" which had him on Addams bad side as it got a little (not a lot) of media attention.

This is from a guy who was at UGA from '97-'00 and what we heard about on campus.

If he had won enough, that wouldn't have mattered. But he kept getting beaten by Georgia Tech.

Kent State exposed the impact of UGA's defensive player losses from last year.

I've asked this question of everyone posting this, but yet to get an answer.

What is your thought process as to why the Kent State game showed impact from losses while the Oregon and South Carolina games (two much more talented teams) did not?

The reason on the other side is pretty easy to understand. People are saying UGA was unmotivated/didn't show up to play against Kent State so had a bad performance. But you seem to be indicating you think the performance against Kent State is "real" but the ones against P5 teams were somehow misleading. What's the logic behind that thought?

I'm with you.
It can be said that our depth has been exposed by Kent St.

No Jalen Carter and Mykel Williams only played 13 snaps. When Mykel played, Kent St was 3 and out or going backwards.
We have very good DL beyond Carter and Williams. But there isn't a bevy of NFL ready guys behind them. Just future NFL guys who are getting experience.

But make no mistake. Add Carter and Williams to go along with Nolan Smith and Pop... and the defense is nasty.

Also said Kent State's QB would start for most of the bad SEC teams, including Auburn.

No shite. We are an injury away from me starting for Auburn.

You answered your own question. This was
the "real" reason. He lost to GT 3 Years
in a row and the program had flatlined.

Had absolutely ZERO to do snapping back
at Loran on air regarding "cramps"

Once again,NONE of this had anything to
do with his firing.8-4 and losing to GT
3 years in a row got him canned...nothing else.

As someone who was there at the time... I disagree.

Had Donnan been like Mark Richt was with the media and other UGA officials, he would have had 2-3 more years.

You're looking at his 8-4 records like they would be looked at today. Back then... we had a grand total of 4 seasons with a record greater than 8-4 in the prior decade... and 2 of those came from Donnan. We were on a 4-year run of having ranked teams at season's end. Other than him, we had 4 seasons being ranked from 1984 until 1996.

UGA was looking for a reason to fire a disagreeable personality.

We have different expectations now at UGA and his performance would be considered poor... but at the time it was not.

I bet he doesn’t get fired if replay existed in 1999. The jasper “fumble” was a rough way to lose a rivalry game

If you were (and were paying attention at all), then you know Donnan's firing was about much more than his football record.

The exact same thing happens to CMR in the same situation

He didn't win a division in 5 years and only competed for one in '97. 1-4 vs UT,1-4 vs UF,2-3 vs AU,2-3 vs GT.This resume gets
any HC at UGA fired.
