118-29 in five seasons at New Mexico State. Just lost his first ever home game to a conference foe last night. He was an assistant under Marshall at Wichita State.

I'm indifferent. State's never gone the hot mid-major route except for women's basketball and that was a disaster. We usually go re-tread or top assistant at Power 5 in our hires across the board. Lemonis and Leach were sitting Power 5 coaches - not sure we can do that in men's hoops though.

Can he recruit with the big boys? This conference is loaded with 4 legit coaches.

Cal
Muss
Pearl
Oates

Once Texas enters that will be another legit coach on Beard

Sounds like Howland is going to retire on his own terms. He should be appreciated for what he did at State over 7 seasons. Couldn't quite win the big games that he needed to to move to the next tier.

I don't like it either. I've never been a fan of hiring the successful mid-major with no Power 5 experience even as an assistant. It rarely works out.

Howland couldn’t get them over the hump but at least he stabilized things. He took over a dumpster fire after Rick Ray

Howland deserves a healthy round of applause from State folks for taking over an absolute dumpster fire and steadying the ship. He took it back to being a decent job again after Ray absolutely torpedoed that thing.

I'd like someone with NBA or SEC experience.

While a tremendous recruiter, like a Wilson, Muss, or Pearl can come in and make a big splash people without recruiting ties to the area have tended to struggle.

The SEC is starting to become a seriously talented basketball conference. You need to be able to get those guys on campus.

Would be a Smart hire, excellent coach, only reason he's still at a mid major was that stuff at BGSU slapping a coeds arse. Guy wins

Edit, she was a grad student, not under his direction and didn't complain, a student athlete at a different school did
