I don't get it.

I always thought they chose elephants because they have tusks, and they're in Tuscaloosa. I've never looked into it but that was the assumption I made in my headcanon.

Speaking of dog whistles, at least elephants don’t have to sit on a bag of ice to keep from dying like some mascots.

Hippos kill more people every year than a Tiger or Elephant and they don’t look too intimidating either.

I have heard of bull Elephants killing whole villages never once heard a tiger doing this.

Go slap a bull elephant in the face.

Such a thing could never happen in Louisiana. Except at Tulane, who are the Green Wave but have a pelican for their mascot. And the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns who have a pepper for their mascot.

Have you ever seen the streets of trailer parks all over the state after an Alabama loss? The sister’s blood flows like a crimson tide

That's funny, but the real reason is due to the size of Alabama's lineman. Someone said "Hold your horses, here come the elephants"

Or that is the story I always heard anyway.

Many years ago a sports writer said when the Tide took the field they looked like a herd of Red Elephants.

That's what my Bama Friend tells me.

What a strange post. Oh, and combat is most certainly not required to have PTSD dude.

So easy to find on the official University of Alabama website.

quote:

Crimson Tide
UA’s football team was first known as the Thin Red Line or the Crimson White. As the story goes, that changed on a soggy day in 1907, when Alabama went to Birmingham to play heavily favored Auburn. Birmingham’s iron-rich soil turned to a sea of red mud which stained Alabama’s white jerseys. The team fought Auburn to a 6-6 tie and sports editor Hugh Roberts of the Birmingham Age-Herald is supposed to have said the team played like “a Crimson Tide.” The name has been ours ever since, according to Crimson Tide lore.

quote:

The Elephant
In 1930 Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote of his shock upon seeing the immense size of Coach Wallace Wade’s varsity players when they charged the field against Mississippi: "It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."

A fan is supposed to have yelled out, “Hold your horses, the elephants are coming!” Strupper and other sports writers adopted the moniker “the red elephants” for the crimson-wearing team.

Like all the Tigers roaming auburn and Baton Rouge?

It was used by a sports writer that said Bamas players looked like a crimson tide running onto the field.

Elephants kill at least 600 humans a year; tigers about 60 per year. Elephants are listed top 10 of the deadliest to humans; tigers aren't.

Back then a jump from 110lbs to 220lbs must have looked enormous…haha.

The “tide part comes from a Red Tide that made its way up the Alabama river and eventually into the Black Warrior. It was early September and Bama was playing Vanderbilt in Tuscaloosa. A reporter who had been drinking down by the river came running up to The stadium yelling it’s a Crimson Tide rolling in. Another reporter from Mobile wrote after seeing Bama demolish poor ole Vandy, commented, today’s team was like the Red tide rolling into Tuscaloosa.

So, there you go.

As far as the Elephant, a circus in 1904 left an elephant for a local vet to care for. The Vet was an Auburn graduate. He. Commented to his friend after the 1905 iron bowl that Alabama’s team was as big as that elephant.

So, there you go.

Any other stories you may hear are lies.

RTR and have a great day.

It has something to do with the first Rose Bowl game Alabama played in long ago. Alabama was beating the favorite California team. Alabama was wearing their red jerseys and the California team announcer made some comment when Alabama was winning. Said something like Alabama was rolling up and down the field like a crimson tide. That is genuinely were it came from. Alabama fans should know that of which I am not one. I know nothing about were the elephant comes from
