As you know many people were talking about the "Decline". It tears them up that it is not real and the thought of Alabama winning yet another national title has them losing sleep and grinding their teeth

Relish it

Alabama did not make this decision. They are just benefiting. People are insufferable. Be angry at the committee.

I would think Alabama was hated more during the march from Selma to Montgomery, but maybe not.

You're confusing a legit fascination with a weird fanbase with something else. Seriously, don't confuse being the butt of jokes with being a rival. You do know don't you that the LSU fanbase, in it's own way is just as odd and strange as A&M's. Really, it is.

A lot of BS to try and explain away more BS

LSU in that head

Bama fans think everyone hates them because their team is successful. But really everyone hates them because they act like insufferable assholes.

Exactly. If Georgia had won, Texas would’ve been the 4 seed over FSU. If Oregon had beaten Washington, Oregon would have gotten in over FSU. FSU wasn’t getting in.

The reason people are pissed is because:

a. They are actually FSU fans and justified in their anger or

b. They hate Alabama and/or the SEC and hoped that the committee would put an obviously inferior team in the playoff to guarantee that Alabama and/or the SEC would not win the title.

That is what hope does. The other fanbases had hope after the Texas and South Florida games. Hope that the dynasty was over. Then Alabama ripped that hope right out of their hands.

The biggest mistake the committee made was in not dropping Florida State to #8 immediately after the Travis injury.

I can list a few from Auburns standpoint. Most on here do not know the past.
Don Fuell

The statements and documents purported to show:

1.) That then Alabama head Coach J.B. (Ears) Whitworth asked SEC Commissioner Bernie Moore to investigate Auburn ’s recruiting of Fuell in December, 1956.

2.) That Moore in a letter to the NCAA gave Auburn a clean bill and accused a former Alabama assistant and an alumnus of Oklahoma A&M – where Whitworth was former coach – of making unsubstantiated charges against Auburn with “ulterior” motives.

3.) That the two men named by Moore, plus a third alleged “informant” – Fuell’s father-in-law, advised the NCAA just before this week’s disciplinarian meeting in New Orleans that they were misquoted and misconstrued and wanted no part in the case.

4.) That Fuell, a widely sought prospect from Guntersville , Ala , was interviewed by a mysterious private detective who asked him how much “under the table” money it would take to induce him to switch to another school.

5.) That the same detective, masquerading as a salesman, gained entrance to Fuell’s apartment to investigate his standard of living.

6.) That the NCAA accused Auburn of giving Fuell a contract that called for providing him with an air conditioner for his home, a $1,700 motorboat and a new car or $2,200 cash his sophomore year.

7.) That Fuell has an air conditioner and did have a motorboat but that the financing was arranged by his father. The motorboat was sold at a loss because Fuell was unable to keep up the payments out of his savings from a summer job and an allowance from his father. An operation made necessary on his son by a malformation at birth was a financial factor, the documents showed.

“We are deeply hurt and deeply concerned by the action fo the National Collegiate Athletic Association,” said President Draughon. It is inconceivable that the NCAA convicted us on the evidence we presented. If there is any other evidence neither Beard nor I know about it.”

Fuell money. We were accused of putting him a nice apartment with a new car and a new baot. This came about as the result of two bama assistant coaches coming to his apartment posing as encyclopedia salesmen. bama was incensed that Fuell came to Auburn rather than with them. They desperately needed a QB as their program was in the toilet under Ears Whitworth.

2. The bottomline in all this is real simple. Fuell came from what appeared to be a very average Guntersville family who could in no way afford what the kid had at Auburn. BUT, Daddy Fuell was a bootlegger making lots of money selling illegal booze. In the end, Auburn had two choices, take it in the shorts or see the kid's Dad put in jail. Auburn did the "honorable" thing and kept quiet. All this was fairly common knowlege at the time but certainly not something we could offficially use in court or with the NCAA.

Yeah I really don't know how it compared to 21-0 but I can't imagine it being worse than this.
That was worse. Picture this year instead of FSU being left out, LSU being left out.

There was very little “we beat you once we can do it again” and a whole lot of “Bama doesn’t deserve it”

The Beaube Brothers
A week later, the SEC fined Auburn two thousand dollars for the incident. Auburn said it would not appeal the fine. Commissioner Moore revealed that Auburn defensive coach Hal Herring gave the twins five hundred dollars each on November 28. Apparently, Herring acted on behalf of an alumnus.

President Draughon commented, "After full inquiry we accept as fact the statement that one of our coaches has made offers in cash in excess of normal grant in aid allowable." The existing grant-in-aid setup allowed players tuition, books, room and board, plus fifteen dollars per month for laundry.

But Draughon offered some additional information. He said, "Persons acting in the interests of another institution" had led the twins to believe they would be given a furnished apartment. When Herring discovered this, he "unwisely, in the heat of competition, was led to make a cash payment."

Draughon didn't mention any names, but he was referring to the University of Alabama. The twins said Auburn and Alabama had been the only two SEC schools to offer them scholarships. Auburn also believed that Alabama's recruiting coordinator had called the SEC Commissioner and reported Auburn's misdeed.

"We cannot excuse the fact that the excess upon Auburn's part occurred because persons acting in the interests of another institution made the original offer," Draughon said. But he added, "To penalize one institution and not the other can only result in sharpening the rivalry."

Jeff Beard, then the athletic director, said he and Jordan immediately drove to the home of Hueytown High School quarterback Richard Rush, who had just signed with Auburn. They gathered goods which, according to Beard, had been given to the player by Alabama during the recruiting season, and transported the goods to the SEC commissioner's office in Birmingham.

"We told him that if he wanted evidence, there it was," Beard later said.
