I think there is some connection between Oats/Izzo and Michigan State
Yep.

Oats worked Izzo's basketball camps for more than a decade as a high school coach in Michigan.
“He’s the guy I’ve always looked up to,” Oats said. “It is a little surreal. ... It’ll be a little different, going down and shaking his hand before this game.”
Izzo might have played a role in Alabama’s hire of Oats, too. Athletics director Greg Byrne placed a call to Izzo before making a decision.
Then there is the connection between Izzo and Nick Saban, who both worked at Michigan State as assistants in the 1980s before serving as the Spartans’ head basketball and football coaches in the 1990s.
“First time I met Saban, we talked about Izzo,” Oats said. “I’ve talked to Izzo about Saban when I see him on the road. And those two are still pretty well-connected and stay in touch. We’re a long ways behind Michigan State basketball as far as tradition.”

Not sure what the local and national reaction would be if Texas hired Bruce, but I personally think he could do really well in Austin.
He's a great coach and would do well there. Auburn fans forget that they were a perennial bottom dweller in the SEC in basketball before Pearl. The fan interests in AU basketball was near zero. For Pearl to take that program and turn it into the present product is nothing short of amazing.

Wait, nobody going after Pearl?

I think Bruce would thrive at pretty much any school where football is #1. He's great at being a salesman, but I don't think his personality would go over well at a place where the sales tactics aren't necessary.

I was talking about Kentucky but it would be wild if Texas hired Pearl.

Texas cares way too much about reputation to hire Pearl. Though I agree he would kill it in Austin.

Would Texas pay $50MM for Cal + another $50MM contract?

Pearl would be a home run hire for them. With the talent he could get there he would be very successful, IMO.
I don’t get the bad reputation crap, the dude cooked some hot dogs for recruits and paid a huge price. He probably don’t even own a grill now.
But I hope they get what they deserve.
