Instead we have a bunch of bureaucrats with agendas imputing a bunch of nonsense, moving goalposts, and referring to retarded statistics/arguments. It’s become absurdly subjective.

Sounds like the coach’s poll where biases existed.

I would not oppose that because the computer would do a much better job of SOS if the algorythm was written properly. SOS is extremely important in my mind and you can't use it with the current format. I don't think there should be automatics such as Tulane has the pleasure of getting their teeth kicked in just because they are the highest ranked community college team.

Eff it. Why not just go to 64 teams like everyone really wants, right? Maybe even make it a little more inclusive by letting the teams sitting at #64 and #65 battle it out for the last seat at the table. There's no reason football shouldn't last well into February, or maybe even march.

In all seriousness, there is no reason to have 12 teams in a playoff to determine who the national champion is. A four team playoff worked just fine, because the best team was pretty much certainly going to be among those teams included.

I'm not saying it has to be the BCS algorithms - there may be something better.

Just take the clown committee out of it. Their conference call explanations are brutal

This is exactly why they were put out to pasture. They didn't spit out the rankings the humans wanted and they were retired. Will be no different if we go back to them.

Nah, much better metrics exist now.

Hell my computer rankings were better than the BCS ones.

If the system can't predict the winners of games with about 70% or higher accuracy(75% preferable), then they don't have a good pulse on the team strengths.

I like humans, but who the actual F chose this panel?

LINK

PAC 12 conference President? Of course ND President is on the board lol. What a genius idea get 1 president from each conference to elect the playoff when 5 out of the 11 only get 1 bid. The other 11 bids go to P4 teams. One seat is ND who unfairly has positioned themself as a virtual lock.

That leaves 5 Presidents to figure out 10 spots.

Oh forgot to mention these presidents are not "experts" in college football in ay capacity of who is most deserving. They ARE likely experts on the behind the scenes and money aspect. Absolute stupidity to have the humans choosing who is the most qualified to be in a CFP not be experts in what makes a team worthy of a top 12 spot at the end of the season.

My question with the computers is what items are they comparing (in other words, how do they determine what’s “better/worse” than something else…or are those not given)?

Depends on the model, but most of them are efficiency based (i.e. how a team perform down-to-down, strip high variance explosive plays out) and then they weight those numbers to SOS

12 or 16 teams is too many.
8 teams playoff would be perfect based on bcs ranking

No one wants to hear this and I don't care for it, but the real way is to break out the top 32 teams from their conferences, schedule with actual parity, and run a wildcard/playoff system like the NFL. There aren't any programs perennially outside of the top 20 or so that really has a chance anyway.

Leave everyone else (33+) to play in the old bowl system as a lower division. Maybe even add promotion and relegation.

Right now there are way too many uncontrollable factors, and SOS is the largest elephant in the room.

In other words, there’s no 1 formula that everybody agreed upon.

Good question, and honestly I've never really thought of that.

I guess you have to cut bait and some point and admit that some programs, "rival" or not, are just never going to compete at an elite level in modern college football, no matter what.

Then there's always the possibly of promotion/relegation if you wanted to hold out hope.

Y’all are funny. We aren’t going back and will continue to add teams to the playoff as the fans want. Just because a few fans of a handful of teams are all tore up because they see the end of their little kingdom coming down the road doesn’t mean a hill of beans. The chance for a Natty is now gonna be open to more and more teams which will attract more and more fans. Your precious regular season will continue to be fun and SEC fans have proven they will continue to spend money on games that don’t really matter but the real season will now take place in December and January.
