Seems like a solid hire, but would’ve like to have seen Bama go with more P5 experience and more HC experience overall.

The guy has been a head coach for a total of 4 years.... If this hire doesn't tell you all you need to know about the level of care at UA for basketball then nothing will.

Recruiting not going to be an easy thing at Alabama without a name.

He took Buffalo to the Tournament in back to back seasons. He’s a good coach.

Don’t need recruiting. It worked out great for Avery didn’t it.

It's way to early to judge Oats, but he inherited a ton of talent from what Bobby Hurley built at Buffalo.

Hurley is doing the same thing at Arizona St. ASU won 15 games Hurley's first two years, then 20 and 23 games the next two with NCAA appearances.

Im interested to see what Oats can do.

If Byrne is behind the Matta “smokescreen” he is dumb and needs to learn about managing expectations

I agree with Smoove. Bama needed a name. Some white dude from Wisconsin with 4 years experiance won't cut it. Should be fun.

Buffalo doesn't play big boy basketball. This is another mid major hire that doesn't mean anything. Will be shocked if this guy has any different results than Grant had. Awful hire.

Bama's bball program isn't a blue-blood. They can't just go hire a huge name like the football program can. They have to try and find an up and coming star, and this looks like a pretty solid gamble to me. I'm excited.

Yeah in general it's always tough to project mid-major coaches with little experience to major schools. You have your Anthony Grants and Shaka Smarts, then you have Will Wade (all 3 from same mid-major)

Honestly I think it's a fine hire

It just may take some time to get off the ground and I'm not sure how that'll fit with Alabama's impatience

I don't think many on here really follow Buffalo Shooty hoops enough to offer an informed opinion but the guys I follow on twitter who would know all seem to think highly of him. I will say that 32-4 is hard to pull off regardless of conference so he obviously did something right.

Can this man take the Tide to a 17-12 mid February record? Can he land them firmly on the bubble?

Consistency is important for a program
