Because we don't have the budget of LSU, Bama, Tenn, Fla.
Schools like State, UK, Vandy, Mizzou play similar series.

Don't understand why would play southern miss in the first place.. Very risky game for them to scheduling. They already have play a Power 5 team.. Putting with them is just dumb.. One reason Ole Miss will not go vs southern miss. Southern Miss makes it their super bowl type game.

We play at Memphis and Tulane in the future as well. Both 2 for 1 deals like this one. Easy travel for our fans and not much cost for team travel

I think we will see more of this in the future unless the SEC goes to a 9 conference game schedule. It saves having to splash the cash each year and G5 teams are starting to hold out for either big time payouts or 2-1 deals more and more it seems.

I am fine with this. 2-1 is a good deal for State. The programs are on different levels now. Back in the late 70's into the 80's they were even and USM even had an edge on us. However, we have won the last 4 games and on the field lead it 16-12 overall.
So yes in the present day we could lose this game but it is not as likely. The talent level has tipped heavily to State now. Yes USM will play over its head in these games but I think we will be ok. Plus they are all early games (September) and it will be a big game for our guys too. We will be up emotionally and I think we will play well.
So overall it is win - win for State and MS in general as well as USM.

I know some teams have a tendency not to play instate teams and I get it. But quite frankly Everyone is tired of seeing Alabama vs Western Carolina or Arkansas vs Toledo. There's no reason Alabama would lose to UAB or Troy really ever. You may have your ULMs here and there but those are rare.
I think you would have more interest if more instate programs played each other. Good for MSU for having guts if you will. Southern Mississippi has been a decent FBS team but nothing more than Louisiana Tech. It's someone MSU should handle.
Just like Alabama should handle South Alabama.
I think MSU getting a 2 for 1 is the big win here and that should distress any naysayers. And you probably help your state out by having the road game in Mississippi since MSU tends to play against nobody non p5 teams on the road anyway.
Why go to Boston to play UMass when USM is sitting there in Hattiesburg? I don't see anything wrong with it.
The MS politicians should force Ole Miss to play Southern like they seem to be influencing MSU and USM to do. But as we have seen recently, Mississippi is a corrupt state that will do anything and everything to make Ole Miss their #1 team. Yet ironically they're not.
