You can practice anytime.

Not really if players opt out of these minor bowls. Penn State had eight or nine players opt out mostly on defense and a few on offense.

You don't need a bowl for extra practice time. Just call up some players from a different program and play at a rink a dink high school stadium.

Opt outs are not an issue at all.

That means all the new guys who will be playing next year will be getting more reps and more practice time and game experience with the ones.

Opt outs are a big issue for these minor bowls. Myles Slusher who is a junior starting safety for Arkansas has entered the portal. When you start losing a good amount of games and you have nothing to play for then these players can go declare for the draft or the ones who aren't getting playing time regardless will hit the portal.

You don't just see these opt outs for just potential NFL draft picks but players that could be playing in these bowls but instead take the path of least resistance of using the portal to find teams that have needs to fill.

NEWSFLASH: College football doesn't matter, it's entertainment.

The extra practice and fun experience for players still have value. Bowls are more for the players than the fans or polls.

The only reason they matter now is for the extra practice your allowed to have.

Personally I’m going to enjoy the hell out of the Orange or Sugar Bowl.

What are you..12?

There was a day when(even if rigged superficial BS), that the AP decided Natties based off them. When these tv tilts were huge towards recruiting and school brand sell. Bowls were a whole betting season upon itself to the wiseguys..even more than current..as there were proven HC & School track records and more relevance to the bowls and their results outside of the CFP Final 4.

Now as mentioned by most here, reduced to mere exhibition garbage games.

That is why I advocate for a 16 team play off.
1st round hosted the higher seeds.
Final seven games use the biggest bowls.
Orange, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, Peach, Rose and Citrus.

Then keep the 10 best bowls for the next 20 teams that are deserving. Sun, Gator, Outback, Music City, Holiday, Liberty, Texas, Belk, Independence, Alamo
The above are just ones I selected based on history and prestige. They could easily be different.

Then 36 teams make the postseason. You have to earn it again.

Playoff includes the champions from the 5 P5 conferences, 5 G5 teams and 6 at large teams.

This would create the best of both worlds.

Let's face it: bowls were always consolation prizes. We made them feel important because what else could we do?

Now we have a mostly fair system to crown a champ and we so the facade can stop.

I really have no idea how people come up with this stupid kind of shite.

Are we pretending that the entirety of college football is NOT about entertaining the fans? Some fans just like to watch college football games without caring about what they're supposed to "mean" outside of simply being entertaining.

They used to vote the national champ before the bowl games, so they used to literally not matter

The Cotton, Sugar, Rose, Orange and Fiesta bowls were the pinnacle of college football.

The experience of being hosted for a week with player activities, “swag bags”, little to no pressure because the game doesn’t really matter is a stark contrast to the business environment/mentality of the regular season. And the extra practices are an opportunity to see what the depth/growth of a team really looks like.

So I stand by my statement.

Disagree here. New Years Day bowls were fricking lit early 2000s and prior.

Nobody sat those bowls out.

Ok, so the guy who is going to be playing next year gets more practice reps and more game time experience.

I kind of hope some players at Alabama opt out for the bowl game. I want to see where things are heading for next year.

I felt differently about it in the past, but now I see the upside.

Bowl games always existed to make old rich guys even richer.

Playoffs always made more sense.
