This, people that enjoy Jim N Nicks most likely eat at applebees.

Jim n Nicks used to be pretty decent. Then they went up in price and down on servings.

Me too. The menu was waaaay to big for a normal restaurant, but I swear, EVERYTHING they did, they did well.

everything on the menu at el barrio is excellent, and the atmosphere is great.

do di yo's has pretty good greek food, but i dont care for the atmosphere. the fish market is fricking nasty. chez lulu in english village is a nice little laid back restaurant.

ZOMG 2 Votes WTF? JimNNicks is terrible overpriced fatty meat

If you don't mind driving a little north of town for the best BBQ and desserts you'll find it is at Big Daddy's BBQ in Warrior, AL off 31. Family owned and operated he won best BBQ in Bham last 3 years in a row and several out of state rib and BBQ competitions, SERIOUSLY AWESOME BBQ, and Shandi his daughter went to culinard and then trained in ATL as a desert and pastry chef so all deserts are awesome as well, but try the Heavenly Pie

If I was going to tell a stranger where to go in Bham, here's what I'd say:

Five restaurant in Lakeview is new and is really, really good. It is modeled after Red Bar in Grayton Beach. GianMarco's is the best Italian restaurant and Bottega Cafe is all around a great restaurant....especially if you can sit outside.

El Barrio is great Mexican, as is Little Donkey in Homewood. Both aren't white table cloth but they aren't in some cheap strip mall place either. Cocina Superior is also a great spot.

For BBQ, Saw's in Homewood is awesome.

As far as bars, Tin Roof is the hot thing at the moment. Oasis is probably the best "bar" in Lakeview. Innisfree is kind of yesterday's news. If you want to go to somewhere a little nicer to have a drink, Dram Whiskey Bar in Mountain Brook Village is hard to beat. Pale Eddie's Pour House downtown is a great spot as well. Avondale Brewery is great for day drinking.

Wow!

This thread delivers. Thanks very much for all of the advice. Keep it coming.

We are coming from Nova Scotia. I have been through the area a couple of times, but never, really experienced Birmingham. And that's what we intend to do this time.

We will be staying at Shoal Creek. I know that is not exactly downtown. We'll probably plan to take a cab home after our night out.

Can't wait!
