If you're ESPN would you even want $300 million from FSU and/or Clemson or any ACC school? Or, would you prefer to move them to the SEC who is your business partner?

FSU BOT meeting going on right now...

quote:
FSU President Rick McCullough: "Our goal would be to stay in the ACC. But staying in the ACC under the current situation is hard for us to figure out how we remain competitive. Unless there were a major change in the revenue distribution within the conference."

quote:
FSU president Rick McCullough: "We currently face a very difficult situation. We are seeing large media deals that have been made with places like the Big Ten and the SEC which in many ways is ... an existential crisis perhaps for Florida State University."

quote:
FSU president Rick McCullough: "I believe that FSU will have to, at some point, consider very seriously leaving the ACC — unless there were a radical change to the revenue distribution."

I don't care if the big 10 adds 50 schools, the SEC doesn't need to do ANYTHING just because they do. We've got a great lineup and I'm ready to roll.

Duke has no pull in football and there is no proof that post Coach K will retain the “Duke” basketball brand we currently think of.

From a $$$/ad/media rights standpoint basketball is barely relevant so the discussion is really all about football.

Further, any discussion around “controlling media markets” is 10 years antiquated as the money is no longer based on adding markets but on national media ad buying interest as most consumers have shifted from local cable to streaming.

Adding to this is the media grant of rights which makes any discussion of ACC schools academic unless the entire conference folds or the GOR nears the end of its agreement.

The only relevant questions are which schools if any would add value and if so are they a social and cultural fit?

Duke and UVA don’t bring the football ad value and are a hard no from a culture standpoint.

Va Tech and NCSU are the both questionable from a value add standpoint and subject to the GOR issue, but would be decent culture fits.

UNC, FSU and Clemson probably fit the profile but are subject to the GOR restrictions and would be waitlisted until the money works.

ND would be a huge revenue add but is a questionable culture fit and is also entangled in the ACC GOR issue to some degree.

It's not all about football. Duke, UVA, and UNC are schools with huge endowments, great academic/research prowess, and national brands (they bring viewers). They would all be great additions to the SEC. The cultural argument is not that relevant when you're dealing with this kind of money.

You're a damn fool if you think the SEC wouldn't accept UNC or UVA because they aren't a football power.

Exactly. You add Duke, Virginia, and UNC, the SEC would be the wealthiest conference in the country. Duke can easily dump money into a football team. Clemson and FSU can't dump 12 billion in their endowment.

UNC
Clemson
FSU
Virginia Tech

Good additions if we go to 20.

UNC and Virginia should go B1G. They will be perennial doormats in the SEC.

Cal and Stanford don’t really add anything to the conference athletically.

There's a lot of political pressure coming from Sacramento for the Big 10 to take Cal or they may try to block UCLA from joining. Stanford maybe for academic prestige.

What would Georgia Tech add to the SEC?

We already have an academic punching bag with no fanbase in Vandy.

16 teams is plenty for the SEC...

Just use the ACC as kinda like triple A baseball teams for the SEC...

With the NIL and immediate transfers, the ACC would be a asset to the Conference...

Dumb. 4 conferences of 16 with the top 2 from each getting auto playoff bids and 4 at large would be ideal. Anything past 16 teams on a conference is dumb for a 12 game regular season.

This comment is way wrong. Stanford has more NCAA national championships than anyone. And, Cal has the 10th most NCAA national championships right behind LSU.

The deal has already been made that UCLA will give Cal some of their B10 money. If Cal joins the B10 there's no need for that agreement anymore. Stanford can do whatever they like. They have the money to be independent or quit football.

Doormats in football is a likelihood but you don't want every team in the SEC being really good. You need a few guaranteed wins for the elite football programs. Other than that, UNC and UVA are competitive and they bring more viewers, prestige and money to the SEC.

Let’s just add FSU and Clemson and call it a day. They should have been the target back when we added aTm and Mizzou. They fit in geographically and make way more sense than any of the Texas schools.

I’ll tell you what.

Whoever the Big 12 commissioner is deserves a raise. I thought they were dead in the water. They are going to end up fine.
