I guess the Big 12 didn't consider BYU's scheduling restrictions before inviting them?

Just threw their name out and sent an invite.

This statement is problematic.

Think of the number of excused absences you'd get as a student though. With the new trend of attendance points in college, it's a huge recruiting point imo

We’ve had conferences with far apart schools for a while now. FSU/Syracuse, Miami/Pitt same division, West Virginia is pretty damn far from most other big 12 members, and before Idaho got kicked out of the Sun Belt they had to travel all the way to Troy Alabama just to get blown out.

Was this for all sports or just football?

You know the schools play in other sports, right?

In any case, if BYU's other opponents can figure it out, so can the Big 12.

Essentially if your program has a few good seasons they get to move up to a better conference

Or Tucson to Seattle, or New Jerset to Minnesota, or WV to Austin.

Distance doesn't matter today. It's not 6-10 extra hours on a bus anymore to get to these far away places. It's 30-60 extra minutes in the air on a flight that costs essentially the same whether you're traveling 300 miles or 1000.

Yeah, relegation?

I actually like that concept for college football.

(Or at least I think I would.)

I understand that distance is less of a factor, but Provo to Orlando is 1,000-1,300 more miles than any of those you listed. That shite adds up in terms of costs and time to get players back and forth on a weekday.

You all think the big 12 stays power 5?

No way, the only reason the Big-12 is a power conference with their other 8 members now is because of Oklahoma and Texas.

The four additions, while very good competitively overall in football, are not going to replace the eyeballs and contender capacity of the two departures.

Big-12 has possibly made themselves into the best basketball conference in college sports though. Not that it is worth much monetarily - football drives the money - but they ought to be better than the AAC or ACC many years.

Baseball and Basketball play on Sunday, along with many other sports.

They going to have kids flying from Orlando to Provo mid-week to play a volleyball game?

Eh. Easy 3 hour flight. Delta flies direct.

In some ways the travel factors are overblown but it is situationally a problem. When you start factoring in weekday game commitments with broadcasters along with distance and the inevitability you're going to have some back-to-back travel weeks, you can create circumstances where you really screw over of some teams with disadvantageous scheduling.

I think some of those late Pete Carroll SoCal teams were wasted by the atrocious reality of the Pac 10 footprint and their commitment to Thursday night games on ESPN back in those days.

Like I said. An extra 60 minutes in the air, with essentially no extra financial cost. Distance is a total non-issue in this day and age.

Trust me, those mid-week, long-distance road games suck. These ADs are having no consideration for the actual student-athletes who participate in sports other than football.

Unpopular thought, the Big 12 might actually be a better conference with those additions. The recruiting boost teams like UCF, Cincinnati, and BYU will get will be respectable. Are they a national championship contending conference...no, but in 10 years maybe

This is actually a true statement. UCF and Cincinnati are consistently good programs. Now the conference goes back to 12 teams with two divisions likely.

East

(7)Cincinnati
(9)Iowa State
Houston
Oklahoma State
West Virginia
Central Florida

West

TCU
Texas Tech
Baylor
Kansas
Kansas State
BYU

They'll just adjust the schedules around a bit to satisfy their religious beliefs. The Big-12 is undoubted the holiest conference now w/ Baylor, Texas Christian, and Brigham Young. I bet they will end up having a nice little voting bloc to protect their interests across denominational lines.
