Yes to the best and to hell with the deserving.

No doubt a 12 team playoff would have cost UCF their national championship in 2017.

It should be the most deserving
Yeah, I don't see how you can decide who is "most deserving" when some teams play in a conference full of powder puffs. If we're just going to put the teams in with the fewest losses, I propose Bama joins the MAC.
They just won the AAC, won the Cotton against USC.
Two things are happening;
The playoffs are about to expand to 12, with 6 conference champions guaranteed to be in.
And the recent meat of the AAC (Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston) are leaving for the Big 12.
The AAC in turn cannibalized CUSA, so I'd think they are the favorites to be that 6th conference to get a bid.
The AAC will be:
Tulane, East Carolina, Memphis, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulsa, Wichita State, UAB, FAU, UNCC, North Texas, Rice, UTSA.
One of those teams will likely be in the playoffs. If you can be good when it starts (as Tulane is now), you might well become the portal destination for a lot of guys not good enough to go to the P5 contenders (Bama, LSU, UGA, Ohio State etc).
I mean, why go to Texas Tech, Miss State or NC State, if you're stepping up in class? You're not going to win that conference. But if you all go to Tulane or Memphis (pick the team), you can win the AAC and get into the playoffs.
And one little run now, say Tulane has a good season following this year, that isolates that school as the best-case choice. And if they make the playoffs a couple years straight, they become a "perennial playoff team"... upping the chances of future transfers.
Now, they won't WIN the playoffs, but if they go every year they get some serious attention.
It's crazy to think about, and I think Cincy may have made a big mistake.

quote:Totally agree. If you didn’t earn the spot during the season, you shouldn’t be there.
You can't award playoff spots for who might be the best... it has to be based on what those teams do on the field.

That’s the only appeal that a 12 team playoff has to me at this point. It’ll be harder to get fricked over because of playing a tough schedule

quote:That and you are going to have 10 to 15 teams complaining about deserving the last spot instead of just 2 or 3 teams crying about the 4th spot. 6 to 8 is the ideal number of teams for a full playoff.
Which is why a 12 team CFP is just going to water down the importance of regular season games.

The way the system is and should be is the teams in the playoff are those who deserve to be in based on the regular season
Except the new 12 playoff system will not. Guaranteeing P5 conference champion a spot will not do that. Just because a team from a weaker division happens to get lucky in their CCG does not add any value to what they did in regular season. Purdue went 8-4 deserves nothing for that.

The only way to do it should be based off of wins and losses. Otherwise you’re just picking names based on feels.
Being in the SEC…we don’t have to worry about scheduling OOC games or hoping we get in. Take care of business…even if you don’t win the SECCG…and your still in.
The downside is we’re the toughest conference so if you lose two games it’ll be tough. That means some teams will be sitting at home even thought they’re better than those that are in.
TL/DR. Don’t lose to a TN team with a gimmick offense.
