Jim Hawthorne call of Blake Dean winning double vs Rice in CWS
I miss Hawthorne. He became a crotchety old bastard in his later years and had plenty of gaffes, but his genuine emotion and famous calls just won't be replicated by Chris Blair.

Probably not gonna make me a lot of friends here, but Gary Thorne's call in the 2005 Capital One Bowl was also pretty insane. I wish he commentated more college football.
That hail mary was 100% on Saban. Defense was completely out of position before the snap and he left a timeout in his back pocket.

It’s a matter if taste and I wish Hawthorne all the best but the improvement that came from the Blair change is equivalent to comparing Cameron/Miles O at it’s worse to what we saw last year with Ernsminger/Brady. Specially his last 3-5 years,

t was during the Croom era - we were playing one of the blue bloods and nothing went right and we got our asses kicked. Sonic Drive in sponsored the Sonic Drive of the Game. We had been shut out, so there wasn't a significant drive. Jack in his classic voice - the Sonic Drive of the Game will have to be my damn drive home back to Tupelo!
It was the 2008 Egg Bowl. You never get anything correct.

Why does this guy get so much shite from the Bama faithful?
I think his style and delivery is great.
He reminds me of all the old school guys.

Jack Cristil's 2008 Egg Bowl was incredible. For reference, this was Croom's last game and Ole Miss won 45-0 while State had 37 yards of total offense.
Some of those quotes sound like something Bob Uecker would say in Major League

He's terrible at actually painting a picture. I never really listened to him until I was in college, and that was at the game with one of those gameday radios. He's fine then. After college and I would occasionally have to actually listen to him without seeing the game you realize he just can't do it. He's awful at giving yard line references. On a big play he will say "He's going to go! He's going to go!" over and over leaving you to guess what is actually happening, how much further does he have to go, etc. On a running play for example he can have a call like "Najee on the carry, spins out of a tackle, runs into another defender, BREAKS THE TACKLE, STIFF ARMS A GUY AND IS brought down for a gain of two on the play. "
As for his style there are too many times he seemingly tries to be a neutral broadcaster. I mean I don't want him to get as bad as some teams broadcasters are when it comes to homer-ism, put he's paid by UA damnit. It's ok to cheer for the team on the broadcast.

Most of Dave South's calls weren't well-known INSIDE our fanbase because we couldn't understand what was happening on the field.

Some back history on that call.
In an interview Rod did years later, he said that his inspiration for that call was that Cadillac would jump around in the locker room before every game screaming "Let's go crazy!!!".
Thanks for the sentiment Gold Tiger. I totally agree. RIP Rod and Paula.
I still get emotional every time I think of the loss of Rod and his wife Paula. I had 3-4 classes with Rod while at Auburn. I wouldn't say we were friends because we never socialized outside of class, but we were definitely very friendly in class. If I had run into Rod 5-10 years later, I would think he would have recognized me (although I wouldn't expect him to remember my name). He is truly an Auburn and SEC PBP legend (of which this conference has many).

Bluegrass Miracle...I remember watching it live.
I'd never seen this video before (under 5 min long).

Not my team but one of the funniest I’ve ever heard of is Jack Cristina from Mississippi State awarding the “sonic drive of the game” to his drive home to Tupelo because the state offense was so bad that day.
I can give you almost an exact quote.
“And now it’s time for the Sonic drive of the game....and that very well be my drive home, from Starkville to Tupelo, and hopefully it will be an uneventfull drive.”
Jack Cristil was around for 50 years broadcasting our games and if we ever stunk something up really bad he’d be very critical in the booth and he knew his job was safe because EVERY fan loved the man.
So like if we had a tough day running the ball, you might hear him say “There you go, there you go, that was progress right there. According to the chains he got 2 feet on that carry.”
Or “Mississippi State has had an outstanding first few minutes moving the chain. The problem is, it’s now 4th and 40, we’re just going the wrong way.”
