Oddly enough, I can't think of Auburn losing one. We have definitely been on the beneficial end of transfers but I can't think of losing one. Can anybody confirm/correct that?

I don’t think any of our fans hate Grier or any QB that left the teams under the last 2 head coaches. Grier made a smart move leaving UF and coach Mac . Him leaving turned out better for everyone but Mac . I think everyone would agree that we upgraded our head coach and Grier is playing in a real good offense.

Losing CJ Spiller to Clemson was a shock.

I really can’t either. Maybe Brandon Jacobs but we didn’t need him. Maybe Roc Thomas if he does well in the NFL.
In basketball, there are Killingsworth and Toney Douglas.

Again, I know this is about players transferring out after they've been at a program, but we haven't had many. We have lost out barely on some pretty good recruits, and as mentioned, didn't take a flyer on sleepers who became NFL HOFers. The list:
-Jerry Rice
-Brett Favre(Felker told him he wouldn't play QB in the SEC but safety. Nice scouting job)
-Keshawyn Johnson(we had him committed and I believe USC swept in at the la$t $econd)
-Nkdamukong Suh( his sister played soccer here and if we had any other coach besides Croom he signs here. Still came down to us and Nebraska)
-Can Newton(I ain't opening this can of worms again)

OP - you mean more like players that were at the school transferred (ie uf-newton, bama-kamara), players that had either close in-state ties (lots for lsu and uga due to talent) and/or family connection (um-peyton)?

For UT - due to in-state talent and knoxville proximity - Randall Cobb comes to mind. Funny how he didnt want to be a WR, damn racist UT and Fulmer, but ended up being one in the nfl (not racist nfl though) ha. Probably could have fallen in depth hell at the time at UT though. (soooo sad to think of now though how much we've fallen:()

I can't really think of a good one for Mizzou. Although it's a little different I would say Ezekiel Elliott was The One That Got Away, although he was never officially a tiger. Dude spend his entire life wrapped around Mizzou football

Georgia, Nick Marshall? Although he’s an odd ball who switched from CB to QB. How did that happen?

I think he played some QB in high school. But he was caught stealing from his teammates and had gotten in some other trouble, iirc.

He would be a good guess, though. Tray Matthews, maybe?

I think he means players who signed with you and then transferred.

Michael Dyer, maybe? He went to Arkansas State and then to Louisville. Made it to the pros.

Recent history: Auburn would be Deshaun Watson. I'm not sure how close he really was to coming to Auburn but would have been a huge game changer if he had.

For Texas A&M the answer is Jarrett Stidham.

I think so too. Midget Murray was not and is not a SEC QB, but the best player who got away was the DT, Ed Oliver, who will be a top 5 pick next year at UH.

That was the first name that came to my mind as well. Newton and Grier didn't really get away from us, their actions took them away.

Of course, it is hard to not look back on the Newton situation and play the "what if" game.

You think? You may want to check up on your Georgia high school records

I was talking about players that played for your team who left or transferred for whatever reason.
But I can understand with my thread title how it could confuse some, so it’s cool to here about all the close recruiting losses too.

Some SEC ties, so I’ll jump in on this with what I think is unmatchable.

Texas was an eyelash away from having Y.A.Tittle, Doak Walker & Bobby Layne in the same backfield.

Tittle left Austin after a summer of competing with Layne & headed to Baton Rouge, where he wanted to be all along. Walker was headed off at the train station by a SMU coach as he was headed to Austin to join HS buddy Layne.

Walker won the Heisman while Tittle & Layne became NFL HOF’s.
