Had Bryant coached in the playoff Era, his Kentucky would have gone, possibly his last A&M team..and he would have taken Alabama to the playoffs 8 out of 10 years in the 70s and 6 out of 10 in the 60s.
All the "he could sign everyone" is a BS talking point created by his opponents.
Every coach in the SEC could sign the same amount of players and the SEC had scholarship restrictions in place and the NCAA implemented restrictions in 1973.

Kentucky was 7th in the polls in 1950 so I don't know why they would've made the CFP.

10-1 SEC Champion. No way they don't go to a 4 team playoff.
Went on to beat #1 Oklahoma in Sugar Bowl

#7 in both polls. And got smashed by the Vols but won the SEC only because they played an extra game.

They lost 7-0 to #9 Tennessee in Knoxville...you call that a smashing?
C'mon man. You're smarter than that I hope

Polls are shite according to most everyone on this board..
But if polls are the benchmark.. Sagarin list Kentucky at #1 in 1950. So I guess Bryant won 7 NCs if that's the standard

Urban Meyer gets crucified for issues that were FAR less severe than what Paterno did.
And? How does that affect where he would rank as a coach?
I thought this thread was ranking coaches by coaching abilities.
Urban Meyer let the University down....the players down...he let everybody down except himself. That has nothing to do with how he coaches, though.
So remind me again what your point was?
Urban Meyer deserves to be crucified for issues. But nor for his coaching abilities.

quote:That seems like a major stretch. Bryant had his success when college football was the wild wild west. He was a great coach, but it was a different time.

Besides, the rankings should not be based on what a coach MIGHT have done IF he had coached in another era.

My metric.
Bryant accomplished all he did purely because of how well he developed players. He didn’t have the modern recruiting goldmine Saban does. Saban gets the best players and makes them even better.
I agree that Bryant is still #1 due to all that he accomplished with way less talent.

Yet you want to give Paterno a pass.

I don’t care what anyone says I hate Alabama but without Bear Bryant there is no Nick Saban to Alabama. And in today’s day in age where the media controls so much of everything Saban got a huge boost like Jesus himself decided to coach the tide and that definitely boost recruiting.Back in the day they prolly had kids who didn’t even know who Bear Bryant was.Saban is the best currently but I think the man who made Alabama who it is still deserves to be on top because without him Alabama isn’t what it is brand wise and Nick Saban never goes there and I don’t care if anyone agrees lol

What? have you alwayss truggled with reading?
Issue for the purpose of thsi thread do not matter.
In reality? neither get a pass.
Let me clarify. When I said one was reprehensible? I was talking about Paterno. Apparently you can't get over our success this year to the point that you can read posts without orange colored glasses.
So. Let me spell it out for you.
For the purposes of this thread (Talking about coaching ability only) bot Paterno and Meyer should be considered.
Both did no favors for their schools, though. What Paterno covered up was reprehensible, and what Meyer covered up and allowed was pretty bad, too.
Reading Is Fundamental
Let me help you with thsi. Here was my post on Paterno and (at the time Woody hayes)
I also don't think Paterno or Hayes should be eliminated issues unrelated to coaching.
Those issues, while deplorable in one case and bad in the other have nothing to do with how well they coached a football team.
Hayes hitting a player in full pads was bad, but hardly deplorable. The kid got hit in the course of the game a lot harder than that.
So, I was saying Paterno issues were deplorable. How is that giving him a pass?
