Tough sell in the Ham....bham bar are strange, it is a fractured scene. There is Lakeview for college kids. Used to to 5 points South for college kids, but that area died; but they still have Dave's Pub and Marty's. There are a few random bars in The North side like Collins bar.
(Note this is as an outside observer who grew up in the Ham, but has not lived there in over a decade.)

What type of music do you like?

Side Bar or Innisfree depending on how old you are but those two places get pretty wild.

I avoid music in bars like crazy. BUT Dave's in Five Points often has bands. Sidebar in Lakeview will be packed to the gills with college aged kids and have a band.
I'm more of a Blue Monkey relaxing environment kind of guy. Dave's is good. The Garage is a bar + sandwich shop near five points that's nice. Near it is The Nick which is a beat up dive bar that could have some live music.

If he is looking for college type atmosphere, head to Lakeview and hop around there for a while. Tin Roof will have two bands, Side Bar will have something, Innisfree will have something. There is some good food around there as well. When you close that down, go to Marty's for their Patty Melt.

I would recommend going to a brewery, as pretty much all of the around here have great atmospheres. Good people, trim tab, Avondale, etc

Wrong board, but I'll give a whack at it.
I went to school in Bham, so my opinion is of that of a younger person.
- the "bar" area of the Ham is Lakeview. In my experience Sidebar was the go to. Often has music on the weekends. Laid back, great drink prices and great staff. There is Innisfree, which is the de facto college bar. Then there is Nana Funks. Since it is "private" it can stay open later than 2 am. It's gotten weird every time I go in there. A bit on the "greasy" side, IMO. Also a Tin Roof location around the corner.
- Brewery - for music I would say Avondale. Outdoors, usually has a band on the weekends. Downside, no liquor. Parkside is a fun bar down the street as well. If you're going to a ball game at Regions Field, Good People Brewing is a no brainer.
The dives (my personal favorites) - The Nick: this place has it all, black walls, pool tables, loud bands, and cheap booze. The Oasis. Near Lakeview, has music occasionally. It's a bar's bar. The Brown Derby: karaoke is the main focus here, aside from drink. And I can't fail to mention Marty's PM. Idk if they have live music or not because I was usually too sauced at this point to remember. Pay the doorman $2 and become an exclusive member (Marty's is "private" so they can stay open all night if they want). The food here is amazing. Get the chili dogs or the burger. Will save your life.
The high brow: Carrigans: if you like fancy mixed drinks, this is your spot. Also has one of the best corndogs I've ever had (yes, $15 cocktails and corndogs). The Collins Bar. Rogue Tavern.
Paramount: downtown, doesn't fit into any category. Never heard a band here, but their bit is classic arcade games. Sounds weird, but you've never played Time Crisis until you've played it buzzed.
And last but certainly not least, Gip's Place. One of, if not the last true juke joint in the south. Here's the deal, Gip is a 90 some odd grave digger who happens to run a live music joint in his backyard in Bessemer. And he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. And you'll meet him. It's bring your own beer/liquor/whatever and no cussing. Pay your $10 at the gate and enjoy yourself. Check the Facebook page to see if they are having a band the day you're going. I can't stress how cool this place is. If you like music, it's the best spot.
I'm sure I've missed some but that's my two cents.

Avondale is a great outdoor location but their beer is meh
might as well go to Cahaba if you're in that part of town though Avondale is more likely to have live acts

I've always loved Avondale beer, but that is subjective. My beef with Cahaba isn't the beer (which is really good) but it's their new tap room. It's really big and open, which is nice. But I went there when they had a band and I couldn't hear myself think because of all the acoustics.

oh yea I do not like it when they have a band in there
edit: Avondale's sour room is the shite though

I have been really impressed with what Birmingham has done with the downtown area. I was through there a few months ago and I was blown away at all the cool stuff there is to do downtown, including the new Regions Park baseball stadium. It's a pretty cool spot anywhere you go down there now.
