The ole radio guys were the best. Cristil was the best I ever heard even if I am biased.
Our new radio guy at State is really good. Has a great voice, a good sense of humor and has developed a good repoire with Matt Wyatt in a short time.

That is a must for a State announcer in the past and in the near future. The HUGE upswing of late won't last.

I got to hear Lindsey Nelson call a lot of games...He was was one of the best....And you are right, I think about him every year watching the Cotton Bowl.

I miss Ron Franklin calling those big SEC matchups on ESPN so much.

I love being able to watch every game that's played on a 75-inch screen.
But there was something magical about those old radio broadcasts... although I was just a small child..... here's to John Forney and Doug Layton... may they both RIP

Cawood Ledford was a great basketball announcer but way too mundane when it came to football.
Caywood was the best PbP guy I remember simply because you could follow the game on radio and picture it in your head. Never listened to him much for football however as it was not necessary at the time...

Lindsey Nelson, Keith Jackson and Mell Allen are the Mt. Rushmore of announcers.

Fulton cursed in joy one time during a Dicky Harris punt return for a TD ... and had to take two years off from Gamecock football and basketball because of that. ('65-'66)

Love this audio short but they screwed up the part where he says it's time for the Sonic Drive-thru play of the game. He was upset how bad we played and said the following
"And now it's time for the Sonic Drive-thru drive of the game, and that drive might very well be, my drive home, from Starkville to Tupelo, and hopefully it will be an uneventful drive."

What is a shame is that anyone pretty much under the age of 35 right now will never know the magic of listening to a great radio announcer for a football game. I think the last of the greats (and there were many) died with Larry Munson. He was the end of an era.
It was like poetry. Their cadence, like a steady drum beat, being able to paint a total picture in your mind, and their vocal inflections from calm muted voice cracking into charging exuberant yells, and bringing it back down again.. and all levels in between. They really were like master painters, describing in real time what could have been Bob Ross waterfalls or happy little trees.
For the younger people who might say "I'll keep my 65 in 4K UHD" you have a point. Watching football today is light years ahead of watching football 20 years ago. But listening to football, (which is basically dead today) when the "greats" were calling it, often surpassed today's 4K ultra. Radio is "theater of the mind" and your mind can paint a better, more fascinating picture than what reality actually is.
When you put your mind in the hand of the masters, it was like being hypnotized by a magician, like some wandering gypsy just tricked you into watching a football game you never watched.
I don't know how else to describe it.
I just put down my Fall pre-emergent so you'd all best get the frick off my lawn before I call the police.

Larry Munson and Keith Jackson, that was the voices of college football. Never be any greater than those two.

Curt Gowdy was a great announcer in several sports. Even on television he described the action of every play. He said he did this because a blind woman once told him she liked his radio broadcasts because she could picture the action in her mind when he described it.
His first real announcing job was calling Oklahoma football when Bud Wilkinson was coaching, and Oklahoma State basketball with Hank Iba as the coach. A legend calling two legends.
