Trying to compare players from different eras is impossible. I can look up how each player fared when they actually did play LSU. Here is the actual record against LSU of each Alabama player listed.

Leon Douglas (1972 - 1976): 7 - 1
Reggie King (1975 - 1979): 6 - 2
Brandon Miller (2022 - 2023): 2 - 0
Collin Sexton (2017 - 2018): 2-0
Latrell Sprewell (1990 - 1992): 0-4

Combined they went 17 - 7 in actual games against LSU.

Thanks. Interesting.

I went with another metric, NBA draft selection:

LSU
Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf - 3rd
Pete Maravich - 3rd
Shaq - 1st
Bob Petit - 2nd
Ben Simmons - 1st

Alabama
Leon Douglas - 4th
Reggie King - 18th
Brandon Miller - 2nd
Collin Sexton - 8th
Latrell Sprewell - 24th

UGA has a sneaky good one if we are talking draft position

Anthony Edwards (1st)
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (8th)
Dominique Wilkins (3rd)
Jarvis Hayes (10th)
Asa Newell (Projected 7-12)

I wasn't selecting based on school spirit or popularity. I chose him because he was an All-American and the first pick in the draft. Other than Bob Petit, what LSU forward has a more impressive resume?

Ben Simmons was good at LSU. But he really blossomed in the NBA. At LSU he was very inconsistent. Some games he was the best player on the floor. Other games he just disappeared.

The is is the SEC rant, not the NBA rant.

I considered what type of players they were in college when picking my list.

A lot of players that are great in college don’t seem to translate as well to the NBA. And vice versa. There are a ton of examples of guys who were just awesome in college and fizzled in the NBA. Adam Morrison, Jimmer Fredette, Michael Beasley, Greg Oden, Tyler Hansbrough, JJ Reddick, Oliver Miller, Christian Laetner, etc. etc. You could spend all day naming top 10 NBA picks who were great in college and flopped in the NBA. And you could likewise spend all day naming great NBA players who were just so so in college. You could put together an all star college team from the players I listed that could hang with any other team anyone could put together at the college level.

If this is a best NBA roster from each school most lists will be different than the best all-time college lineup.

I don’t understand the sudden obsession with NBA success on the rant.

Kentucky would be the only one with a legitimate chance to beat the LSU team IMO. Shaq is just such a huge trump card because some teams have 0 way to stop him.

I was just interested in comparing talent at SEC schools over the years. You made a good point about the difficultly of comparing players of different eras.

I thought using the NBA draft was a good metric for addressing that difficulty. What was the expert perception of their talent AT the time?

Well, if you tried to hit him with a truck, problem is you'd be out a good truck!

Shaq probably wouldn't touch the ball on that team. He would just stand there looking pissed while Pete Maravich put on a dribbling show for 20 seconds and then launched a 20 foot hook shot.

Hell, hey did that a lot during the one year he played with Chris Jackson.

Chemistry and team building are important in basketball.

I'd counter with:

PG Lee Mayberry
SG Sidney Moncrief
SF Joe Johnson
PF Corliss
C Joe Klieine

I have no idea how to get Todd Day on here. He's not a PG, and even though he's our leading scorer all-time, how do you put anyone over Sidney? And at some point you have to account for...

Darrell Walker
Alvin Robertson
Scott Hastings
Scotty Thurman
Anthony Black
Isaiah Joe
Jaylin Williams
