LINK Bryant salary

Check out other coaches cash at that time. Big name guys making chump change back then. Joe Paterno 102k per year. Vince Dooley who won a national championship two years prior to the article was making $100,000 a year in 1982.

Ummmm ok so you proved Alabama has been buying titles since Bear. Ok. Not really front page news. Money talks. Not news.

Well the article is pretty misleading or at the least unexplanatory.

Says Bryant made 104K from the university, but the rest (300k) was from advertisements, etc.

Then goes on to tell what other coaches made, but doesn't explain how much of that is from the university and how much is from advertisements, etc.

So we really don't know if the university paid that much more or if Bryant was just better at pimping golden flake and coca-colas.

He made substantially more than 450K a year even in the late 70's. Nothing wrong about it. He was the beneficiary of lots of gifts from former players at A&M and Alabama in terms of business deals, etc. I know of one deal he had with some former players who got into banking that went very well for all involved. Like I said, so what?

Amazing how much times have changed. That was considered big money back then.

Read an article once that said both Bear Bryant and Bobby Dodd had an ungodly amount of Coca Cola shares between them.

Coach Bryant was a commercial magnet and who could blame the advertisers who wanted to get close and personal with the great coach of his era.

He also received about $300,000 in television and radio benefits,
He also did commercials for South Central Bell. "Have you called your momma today, I sure wish I could call mine."

I think Bear had pieces of this and that...for some reason I think he had something to do with Ziegler Meats for instance. No telling what all he had interests in because of friends and former players as was said earlier.

Coach Bryant was set up with investments through past players alone. A little-known factoid was when coach Bryant also endorsed Ford pickups nationally. He received an undisclosed amount from the sale of 315 customed vans costing $19,000 each back then and decorated with a bear's footprint on the back tire.

Gotta be worth some serious cash to a collector today.

Not sure how much it happens today but back then one of the best ways these coaches made money was by getting in on business deals where they had no investment but would receive profits just because the other investors wanted to use their name. So a real estate developer wanted investors for say a shopping mall. The developer would approach the coach and offer him a 5% stake or whatever just so he could go to other investors and say "well Coach Bryant is one of our partners"

Bear was also included in a bunch of deals as well. Say some guys were buying a tract of land for oil. They'd cut bear in.
