2020 Bama was basically 2019 Bama with Mac Jones substituted for Tua.

Bilbo Aggins almost got his mighty sheep fricking army to the playoffs.

He of course cancelled the bowl game the next year then lost to App State at sheep fricker station the following year.

I’m not a big detractor of the 2020 team, however I do believe that based on the way Covid changed the landscape that particular season, there will always be questions.

How do they perform on the road in front of a stadium of 100,000 drunks versus silent cardboard cut outs. I mean, even. Vegas gives points to home teams.

There were very few standards between the conferences and even SEC teams in regard to number of games, practices, when practices were held, how long teams could practice, how many players could be together at one time in one setting.

Look, as an LSU fan I know my team wasn’t winning much in 2020, even if things were normal. Bama 2020 was a great team and they won the title based on the criteria….which as we’ve recently seen, the NCAA was weak and spineless when it came to team guidelines during the pandemic. That said, it was a season that excluded many of the hurdles teams must face on their way to a championship during a normal season.

Every team faced the same challenges. How coaches, conferences and politicians reacted differed, but the playing field was the same for everyone. If anything, 2020 presented even more challenges to overcome than any other season in history. There were even more distractions than normal. It was the only season with 10 SEC conference games. Home field advantage was largely nullified. It was just two football teams playing on the field.

People can argue that a team other than Ohio State should have made the playoffs, but that happens every season.

At the end of the day, Alabama lined up and beat every team they played.

If 2020 does deserve an asterisk it is for being the most challenging season in college football season.

Some teams handled the adversity well. Other teams saw their best player opt out for the entire season and their head coach check out completely.

No it wasn’t.

Every state was different in how they allowed their universities to operate.

Do you honestly believe that 365 days of difference has any impact on how I look at the 2020 Bama team?

Yes. I think it kills LSU fans that Alabama won the national championship just one year after LSU did. LSU fans convinced themselves after the 2019 season that they had finally over taken Alabama. They thought finally LSU had vanquished the boogieman. And then just one year later they were staring at a .500 record and watching Alabama hoist the national championship trophy. Again.

That’s insane coming from a guy who roots for a school who hasn’t sniffed a natty in decades. Then again, maybe that’s why you feel the way you do.

Are LSU fans now claiming it has been decades since Alabama sniffed a national championship? That is what your post says. You are very well aware that is not true. And no matter how many times you say it it won’t change history and make it true.

The main ones who talk about 2020 are LSU fans.

LSU had their best player quit on them because Burrow was no longer there.

LSU lost to Alabama 55-17 in 2020.

That pretty much sums it up.

You are now arguing that teams played on different sized fields. This was not the case. All games were played on regulation sized fields.

States have always had different laws that impact sports. For instance, teams in states with a lottery that offer all instate students tuition is a recruiting advantage over teams in states without prepaid tuition - especially in smaller non-revenue sports. Schools have different admission requirements, again some teams have an inherent advantage in recruiting over others. Now you have states with different laws on NIL. And now you have teams with drastically different payrolls. So every season teams are faced with different dynamics, and it is just getting worse. Based on your reasoning, every season should have an asterisk by it.

ETA: here is the entire sentence you quoted, it acknowledged teams/coaches/states reacted differently, but the actual playing field was the one constant (except for Boise State’s stupid blue field).

I can't add anything that hasn't already been added by people with common sense. Yeah it was a weird season but it was weird for everyone. Anyone with eyeballs could look at that team and see that they were simply on another level than every other team playing football that year.

You think that somehow made them...weaker?

The number of games doesn't make them weaker necessarily, but it makes them more of an unknown. How many seasons has one or more teams looked good for half a season and then been exposed? That happens every yeat. The thing that makes teams great is beating other great teams and playing in hostile environments throughout the course of an entire season. With no crowds, less games (less than half in OSU's case), and lot's of players "opting out", you just didn't get games like 2019 LSU (people were saying maybe the greatest offense ever) vs Clemson who was going for 30 straight wins, had recently smashed Nick Saban and had the best Defense in CFB. That was a clash of the titans. LSU going into Bama was another.

There was nothing like that in 2020. We just don't know how good Bama actually was because there were no dragons (proven teams/tough venues) to slay that season.

Ohio State won 6 games before the playoffs.

Is that extra credit for Bama beating a healthy, well rested, very talented team?

The fans in the stands thing is a silly argument, as well. It essentially created a more neutral field for each game.

I also recall that Bama faced the fewest teams at the times the games were played impacted by covid in terms of missing key players or coaches.

It was an odd season. But, a very special one also. Some just hated it being Bama on top again. Some LSU fans, mostly those here, just hated such a dominant Bama year came the season after their 2019 glory. This I get, as some Bama fans today and the Updykes among us felt very much the same way with AU 2010. It kind of put a damper on Bama 2009 and was a kick in the balls after a let down 2010 post-NC season.

What's your problem with that title being...a title?
LSU fans don't like acknowledging Alabama's 2020 national championship because their 2019 championship gave them false hope that they were out from under Bama's thumb as a program, and the 2020 season shattered that delusion. /thread

It's because they see the national championships we won under Saban as theirs by right because they "found him first."
