Why is it people call them Bama vs Alabama and not shorten other schools names?

Why do people call it "LSU" instead of "Louisiana State?"
Or "Ole Miss" instead of "Mississippi?"
Or the "Coward Station 39ers" instead of "Texas A&M?"
Or "Ole Miss" instead of "Mississippi?"

State for MSU
Vandy for Vanderbilt
Ole Miss for Mississippi
Arky for Arkansas
Aubie for Auburn
UT, USC, LSU, And UGA (maybe UK) are all short forms

Lots of teams have short nicknames. Like UGA for instance. Most everyone I know now just calls them 'Champs'.

Kentucky vs. UK
Florida vs. UF
Ole Miss vs. Mississippi
USC (their own folk, we all know what everyone else thinks USC is) vs. South Carolina
UT(Check above) vs. Tennessee
Vandy vs. Vanderbilt
Mizzou vs. Missouri
A&M vs. Texas A&M
etc, etc. etc..

That's interesting. I have several Tide friends (one who unfortunately passed away two years ago before I could smack talk him the way he had me over the years) and they all use it.
