I love people who act like they know more about Msu than our own fans. Howland's first year had 7 players graduate. So technically this is his second year.

I'm not really sure what Howland has accomplished to put him that far in front of Johnson
Stansbury lost control of the program, Stricklin almost tanked it by firing Stans without a plan, and Ray didn’t tell MSU that he can’t recruit or coach when he took the job.
Howland took over a steaming hot pile of shat that was low on manpower in year two due to Ray’s recruiting and has the team playing pretty well. There has been a corner or two turned this year and Peters has made some big strides in both confidence and attitude.
Howland purposely scheduled soft in the early season to get the team to gel and build experience. And now a tourney appearance is not completely out of the picture yet. Should be expected to make it next year.

My assessment was I thought Howland did better in year 1. And Avery did better in year 2. So I expected Avery to really kill it this year and Howland to tank. But Howland didn't and Avery surprised me.
But at this point I assume Howland is NIT Bound and Avery is NCAA Bound. Which is a big step for both schools. Unless Alabama just goes 1 and done in the SEC Tourney.

I think all three have done well. Barnes at UT is certainly ahead at this point.
AJ at Bama, I think he is doing well too. It would seem at least some fans jump off the deep end when a team hits a rough patch such as Bama is doing right now. But they will be fine.
Howland is where I thought he would be right now and maybe even ahead of schedule.
I consider this his second year and anybody with half a brain does as well. I think he is positioning us for long term success instead of flash in the pan success. No Seniors on the squad with another stellar recruiting class coming in next year and the future looks bright in Starkvegas and we are not done for this year either despite last Tuesday’s disappointment.

Retirement Rick was seen by many (not all) on this board as the worst hire of the 3 at the time. But he's done more with less than any of the other 2 coaches who have added multiple blue chip guys to their roster compared to our 2 and 3 star guys.
Barnes has really impressed me as a developer and coach since taking over. He also took over a terrible situation after Tyndal got fired and has us back in the national spot light for the first time since Pearl was in Knoxville. That wasn't an easy task

Barnes
Howland
Avery
Howland and Avery pretty similar right now, but Howland is setup for a big time jump next year, where as Avery is struggling with the roster he won't have next year (well really Sexton, but maybe Hall too, who knows).
Barnes has been super impressive this year because overall, I dont see Tennessee as a very talented team at all.

I thought at the time that Howland was the best, Barnes was next and Avery was last.
But that's what they did up to that point. Barnes was a great coach at Clemson and Texas so it's not a surprise he's doing well at Tennessee. Although if he leaves Tennessee, he's going to run out of Orange D1 teams to coach.
Avery was the outlier because he had 0 college coaching experience. Seemed like a bold move. But it wasn't a big thing I'm.
And for Howland, he's obviously had success at Pittsburgh and UCLA so I thought that was a steal for State. And it was really great for both parties honestly. Stricklin turned MSU into a dumpster fire for men's basketball. Which is a shame. But at least he made up for it here. I was afraid he didn't at first.

Barnes for the moment, but that will change as he struggles in post season play. That's what he is known for and Tenn fans will turn on him eventually. The long term, if he stays, is Howland. High quality coach.

Lol he is about to win a conference title, safe to say we will tolerate him just fine.
Huge upgrade from everyone since Bruce

Howland is 60. He is making top dollar. Program is moving up. I just do not see him going anywhere else at this point.
He almost has the pieces in place to have State at a high level for a number of years.
Starkvegas is actually a nice community, a great place to live and I think he is enjoying himself.
He does this gig for 8-10 years and then retires back to Ca. or wherever he wants to for that matter.
Plus his work for over the last three years is just now starting to come to fruition and I don’t see him leaving that.

Come on man, you have turned on him many times already.

No idea what you’re talking about. Pricks about to win a conference title a year ahead of schedule with a team that returns literally everyone next annum, all while running a squeaky clean program.
Just infinitely better than anything we’ve had since 2010.

You're wrong there my good man. Just calling it as I see it and history between those 2 coaches bares it out. I also don't have any probs with Tenn and also like Barnes, he is a good man. Remember I came from the Big 12 and seen his teams collapse more times than not come tourney time.

Remember when Barnes always underachieved with superior talent as well?
And then he turned around and is a game away from a conference title with a rotation solely comprised of 2-3 stars?

If we want to see what underachieving with superior talent truly looks like all we have to do is turn on a Lady Vols game. Holly recruits like Nick Saban but her game day coaching can be beaten by a three day old ham sandwich.

I'm not knocking what he is doing this year, nor do I dislike him or the Vols, understand that. I'm basing my opinion and prediction on his own history. If he does more this year then I'm happy for him and the Vols. There really is only a few SEC teams I can stomach to root for now and Tenn is one of them.
