First of all, congrats to LSU on the beat down of Texas A&M. Usually there's healthy debate about which defense, Bama or LSU, is the most solid. This year, not so much, as I think we can all agree that LSU has taken a step back on that side of the ball due to the migration of underclassmen to last year's draft.

However, LSU owned TAMU yesterday from the outset. It was utter domination to the point I think the LSU defense could have arse raped JFF had they so desired. Bama on the other hand, really struggled against TAMU. JFF made them look like an overrated high school team.

So what gives? Is the scheme run by Chavis better against that type offense than the one implemented by Saban/Smart? I know LSU runs a base 4-3 and Bama a base 3-4 but both teams operate more often out of base formation. Anyway, it's clear that Chavis has JFF's number as they are the only team to make him look mortal each of the last two years. Just interested to hear opinions from some of the armchair coaches on the SECr on why LSU makes it look easy and Bama has struggled. I'll hang up and listen...

LSU is more physical (i.e. dirty) and play like they're pissed off. That scared Johnny to the core, apparently.

LSU is better on the outside and could cover man to man. Alabama CBs couldn't. Overall, Alabama has the superior D but LSU's D matches up better against A&M.

It's really all about the corners.

It's a few factors but Bama handled the weakest part of our D

D-Line

The goal against A&M was to keep JF contained and cover your man with DB's

Worked 2 years on A&M

LSU plays more "street ball" defense. JFF makes a lot of big plays on broken plays.

I think lsu's d is built to stop spread offenses a little better than bama's.smaller and faster lb's and defensive ends.bama's d is a lot more physical .

Answered in another thread, but: Bama players are so disciplined that when a play breaks down and JFF has to make something happen, it throws off the Bama D. LSUs defense plays more fluid and can adjust to adlib plays better. Hell, most of their defensive plays seem ad-libbed.

Stregnths and weaknesses to both styles.

I think it was more mental than anything scheme-wise. LSU pushed our offense around and made them their bitch.

I agree with this statement. Been a suspect area for Bama all season.

What does that mean?

In addition to the play of the DBs, LSU's success the last two years has a lot to do with the DLine playing extremely good assignment football. Never rushed up the field past him, staying in their lanes. Forced him to play backwards far more than he could run forwards.

It's why watching other teams play him is mind numbing. Biggest example was OU's DLine in the cotton bowl last year. It was like they had never watched film. They just rushed straight up the field every play.

ETA: Bama actually did a pretty good job on him this year, but they don't have a Rashard Robinson type on their roster that I'm aware of who could match the physicality of Evans.

Basically, yes.

It has more to do with the athletes Saban recruits for his system vs. Chavis up front. LSU's D can be pushed around a little bit, but against spread O's our speed and length is very effective.

Yeah, John Chavis is known for having undisciplined, street ball defenses. And that's the key. Alabama's defense on the other hand is just too damn well coached to contain JFF

Aggy was more balanced against Bama.

And it was early in the year before Bama found their legs on d.

The result would be similar to yesterday if Bama and Aggy played again today.

LSU's contain rush did an excellent job shutting down Manziel's improvisation. When he scrambled/ran, it was into pursuit.

Nicely done
