Is it happening? How big of a meltdown will there be?

Nope. The committee doesn’t want a two loss Bama. TCU will stay in should they lose; Ohio State moves in if USC loses.

If TCU loses big, I absolutely think Bama can get in

Yes, it would take TCU just being demolished for them to not get in. If you listen to the national talking heads, you can tell there is real fatigue regarding Bama and they want eyeballs. TCU and USC would be ideal because no redos and new teams from all over country.

TCU would have to get beat like 59-0 for the committee to even consider dropping them below a 2 loss Alabama.

I think there is one hypothetical path where Alabama could get in over Ohio State but it's not capable of happening outside of wild fantasy.

Assuming USC chokes this away. Purdue curb stomps Michigan. This leads to a re-evaluation of Ohio State and Alabama with Ohio States loss looking worse. Really the committee just decides they don't want 2 non champions from the same conference in the playoff and instead uses this as an excuse to take Georgia Michigan TCU Bama. This obviously also hinges on Georgia beating LSU.

Even if Purdue somehow boatraced Michigan after Utah beat USC I'm not convinced Alabama has a better than 5000-1 chance of getting the 4 spot.

Honestly USC with a close loss may still be ranked ahead of Alabama. 3 Top 20 wins and 2 close losses to the same top 11 team vs 2 top 25 wins and 2 close losses to #7 and #14. 11-2 > 10-2

Alabama needs USC to lose tonight and Michigan to either lose or get played to a very close game with that Michigan QB looking very bad in either scenario. I think they jump Ohio St if that happens.

I think that Bama should be ahead of Ohio State right now even with 2 losses. If Ohio State would have lost a very close game to Michigan or kept it within 10 points then I think there is no argument here you have to respect the W-L column. When a team that is supposed to be top 1-3 all year gets smoked at home by a team without its top threat playing in the game and a QB that really hasn’t lit anyone up with his arm all year and yet he looks like Joe Montana in the game then that team doesn’t deserve to be a playoff team. Getting smoked at home by a little over 20 points even to a good team there is just no excuse for.

I hate to say this but I hope Bama doesn’t sneak in. The worst thing in the world for Bama long term would be to make the playoffs with this team. Bama needs a change at both coordinator slots and Saban may not do it without some catalyst like missing the playoffs. If Bama plays next season with Golding as DC then it could be a very very long year with no Will Anderson to absorb double teams and Bryce Young to erase the Defensive mistakes.I hate to not pull for Bama to make the playoffs but long term it would be for the best unfortunately.

Because…goodness, you know more about how to coach the number 1 college football program’s team than its living legend coach (even if he is a midget).
