Honest question no troll. I don’t know all the history and was just curious if Bryant ever flirted with the NFL or if any pro team wanted to hire him.

Yes. Miami tried to snag him after the 1969 season. He eventually turned them down and the Dolphins hired Don Shula instead. The rest, as they say, is history.

Read that Bear was the first choice for the Miami Dolphins. Shula was the second choice.

if I remember correctly, Bear had agreed on the Miami job, but when he went to Alabama do discuss his release Alabama said he would have to find a replacement, there were stipulations: such as nationally known, and young. Bear called John Mckay coach of USC and they had discussions but turned down their offer. And the whole thing fell apart

There's an alternate reality where the bear coaches the dolphins for two years, then gets hired at LSU and proceeds to win more championships.

Back in those days the NFL didn't leave nearly as much time for boozing and whoring. So even if the NFL had wanted somebody with that sort of questionable work ethic and morals, they knew Bear wasn't about to put in the work. Bear wasn't the type of guy that wanted a challenge, he wanted to keep playing on "rookie" mode.

Culverhouse wanted to talk with him about the Tampa Bay job in ‘75 or ‘76.

Imagine if that old drunk motherfricker had lost his pants in Lake Erie.

Heard butthurt (literally) Aggies frequently started threads guaranteeing Bear Bryan to *insert program here* all throughout the 60s and 70s.

If you're driving around Lee County and you see a white Toyota pickup in swerving into your lane then it's ole Pat trying to get home from the package store.

Weeb Ubanks (sp) wanted him to coach the Jets mid 60s when Namath was there. Don’t think the talk went anywhere. That was the first I think. Bryant was friends with Bob Hope and thought about taking a west coast team.

That just makes what he did to Auburn for all those years look even worse. According to you, your teams couldn’t beat a drunk with other priorities.

Dolphins wanted him bad before they hired Don Shula.

Washington wanted to hire Coach Bryant away from Kentucky but Mary Harmon refused to move to DC.
