that change in 1971 was under a 'gentlemen's agreement' with the SEC for the two teams to wear contrasting jerseys ---- because so many people had black and white TVs
, which would have made more sense in the mid to late 1960's but with more and more people getting color making this rule effective in 1971 was really weird. But it was for all conference games, not just tv ones.
Tennessee was as much about wearing 'orange jerseys' home and away as LSU was about wearing white jerseys home and away. Tennessee and Auburn in that time frame was almost as big as Tenn-Ala or Aub-Ala. For the 1972 Tennessee-Auburn game at Legion Field in Birmingham the Vols felt Auburn had surpassed their alloted number of games to scout in person and chose to wear Orange that year. Unranked Auburn upset #4 Tennessee, 10-6.

We don't have to not wear team colors since TV in now in color, white for visitors occurred during black and white TV
Interesting I always thought it was to reduce confusion for teams coaches and officials. I could see where having a 320 lb machine in a qb’s face could make say Alabama and Arkansas look like the same team.

Thats just not true. Anyone who knows SEC football knows this has always been a rivalry of streaks.
Hence why Tennessee has the longest win streak of any program against Bama and vice versa
Fulmer killed Bamas program then Bama turned around and killed Tennessee. Very on par for the history

Fatty Fullmore and Roid Krammit tried to kill it, but it came back around and knocked their asses out.
Fatty loved playing us when we were starting some walk-ons, juts like Tuberville did.
