quote:yes, they are. I lived in Houston 15 years and had a lot of texmex and that location in Austin is my favorite. Lupe, and to a much bigger degree Chuy's, vary in quality from restaurant to restaurant.
Lupe fajitas are freakin awesome.

but one of the best things about living here is that you can get real Mexican food that is twice as good as any of those places for half the price in almost any town.
You don't get real Mexican food in Texas, you get Tex-Mex.
When I was in the Houston area, my favorite places were Hopdoddy and Torchy's. The Torchy's in Baton Rouge isn't quite the same

I lived in Austin near the original Torchys, the one in Baton Rouge is exactly the same.

I figured as much given the thread. But do people think of it as an "Austin" establishment?
Or is like Chilis, which started in Dallas, but nobody ever goes to Chilis thinking "wow, this is a totally Dallas place to go." It's just Chilis.
It's funny. Here in Oklahoma we have had Schlotsky's for probably 45 years. I went to the one in Norman in the late '70s when in college.
I hadn't been to one in probably a decade when I visited a small town in Oklahoma and decided to try it. They were pitching the "Austin Eatery" thing big time.
Back in the '70s in Norman, the fact that it was out of Austin was as big a secret as the recipe for Coke. LOL.
Norman is also interesting because I believe we were the first city outside of Baton Rouge to get a Cain's.
At that time the owners of Cain's were indicating that they were going to go with a "college town" model. But those things are everywhere now.

the two in Baton Rouge are disgusting. the wings come out chewy, tables are never clean, and the servers don't care that you're there

I like Hopdoddy, but I have been getting my burger fix at Rodeo Goat lately.

Fayetteville has Torchy's, and will have Hopdoddy soon.
Also just got a Walk-ons which is pretty good.

There are thousands of hole in the wall Mexican places that are not Tex mex. Menudo, birria, tripas.

Hopdoddy, overrated & expensive for the portion
Torchy’s, maybe ok if no other options but pretty meh and quality varies greatly between locations. just about any trailer has better tacos.
Chuy’s, good but not a very big menu
Lupe, big menu, quality can vary a lot, when they do it right it’s very good for a chain
ETA Pluckers, food and service lack in Austin too. the beer is cold if you can get one

Schlotsky's and Hopdoddy both started on S. Congress, just south of the Capitol. Torchy's started out on S.First St., as a food trailer. All have done very well.

Meh. It's just a hamburger. We have plenty of places that sell those where I live.
Are there alternative healthy food for those that don't eat hamburgers?

Hopdoddy is average and overpriced. Their fries are decent. I prefer Grub Burger.
