Auburn's turn around says alot more about Chizik than Malzhan

I see Auburn's success more as an indictment of Chizik than Malzhan being super awesome.
Auburn's turnaround is primarily due to the fact last year's team was not nearly as bad talent wise as their final record. That was a 7-5, 4-4'ish team that completely mailed it in the last half of the season. You look at how tough they played Clemson and LSU, that's not the same team that was losing every game by 50 the last half of the season.
Chizik clearly "lost" the team horribly at some point.
Malzhan is actually getting them to play up to their potential, which he of course should get props for.

Auburn has a lot of talent- it's not that surprising to me that Malzahn is having so much early success.

its a little bit of both.
Chizik was terrible and made bad hires.
Malzahn took an 0-8 (SEC) team and now theyre ranked #11 in the BCS. There is some "awesomeness" there.

It does say something about the shitshow that Chizik was running. I'll reserve judgement on Gus for another couple of seasons.

no shite
the dude was god awful at Iowa State while the coaches before and after him were/are much more competitive.
The dude just ain't HC material.

I agree. It says more about how fricking awful Chiz was but I still think Malzahn's gonna be pretty good.
I think Auburn if they have Malzahn for the long haul could be similar to Leach at TTU. They won't be Oregon, but their attack will give most teams trouble. A consistent 10-win team, and occasional dark-horse NC contender
ETA: I'm also aware that Auburn beat Oregon 3 years ago. But my point was they won't be contenders every single year like Oregon. So you can save it.

It's both. Chizik did a horrible job and lost the team. Even in 2010, you could kind of tell Chizik was holding up a house of cards.
Malzahn is just a superior coach. While I agree that he did have some extremely low hanging fruit to pick by replacing the cluster frick that was 2012 Auburn (a team with talented players), you can just tell that he is so much smarter and better prepared than Chizik ever was.

Yeah, Chizik is looking pretty bad at the moment. Will go down as the worst HC ever to win an NC. Its not a slight to Malzahn to say AU had a lot of talent, they just quit last year.

So in that respect, does A&M's turnaround say more about Sherman than Sumlin?
2011 - 7-6 (4-5)
2012 - 11-2 (6-2)

Says a bit about Scott Loeffler the Brady maker as well.
His offense at VT is currently ranked 112th. That is 6 spots better than his offense at AU finished last year.
ETA: Wasn't all Loeffler's fault. The team did quit and had terrible QB play, but he seems terrible as well.

Says more about Manziel.

You do know that Jameill Showers would have been the starter under Sherman, right?

It says a lot about both coaches. We may have talent but the team literally quit in every game. They didn't want to play football last year
Malzahn has got them believing and that's pretty huge

What is funny about this thread is AU fans knew this and many on here claimed we had no talent. It is interesting to see the turnaround of opinion...

I'm not so sure that Gene Chizik was the only one that lost that team. While Chizik is the HC, the players spend a whole lot more time with their position coaches and the coordinator's than the spend with the HC. It's hard to blame VanGorder & Loefler for any of that mess, they weren't there long enough to make a difference in the team chemistry either way.
IMO - Gus & staff have come in and laid the law down. Gus WILL NOT tolerate a half-arse attitude from his players. He also brought in solid coordinators and supporting staff to whip those softish players into shape and give them a plan to be successful. I don't think the AU fanbase could have asked for more than what they've gotten from the guy. He's done a great job thusfar.

Malzhan is an OCD workaholic perfectionist but we have one of the best staff of assistants in the country.
