Auburn/Oregon: A (long) primer on the Oregon defense

The defensive philosophy is still somewhat mysterious to Ducks fans since Avalos took over the reigns this spring. Avalos had to adapt on the fly at BSU due to mounting injuries and unprecedented personnel turnover during his tenure. Seems like he settled in on a 3-3-5 defense where the shell of the defense looks like a 4-2-5. From what I have gathered and gleaned, here is what I can say:
1) the defensive line will get more vertical
2) he uses a lot of stemming and will go between an odd and even front post huddle
3) the "stud" position, a stand up defensive end to the boundary, is the glue that binds this defense.
4) DBs, especially the boundary safety and spur linebacker/DB will have to fit the run more.
5) it's exotic, multiple and aggressive.
It's really a departure from Leavitt but ultimately it is a better match with the personnel Oregon has. With coaching changes the personnel is a hodgepodge of different philosophies and Avalos can find a home for more defenders.
Here is the depth chart as seen through fall camp:
DE (Field): Gus Cumberlander 6'7" 256, DJ Johnson 6'5" 272
NT: Jordon Scott 6'1" 322, Popo Aumavue 6'3" 313
DT: Austin Faoliu 6'3" 295, Drayton Carlberg 6'5" 282
Stud (Boundary): Bryson Young 6'5" 248, Kayvon Thibodeaux 6'5" 242
ILB (Mike): Isaac Slade Matautia 6'1" 235, MJ Cunningham 6'3" 233
ILB (WIL) : Troy Dye 6'4" 226, Samson Niu 6'1" 206
Corner (field): Thomas Graham 5'11" 197, Mykael Wright 5'11" 185
Spur (field): Verone McKinley 5'10" 192 or Haki Woods 6'3" 200 or Jamal Hill 6'1" 204
Safety (field) : Jevon Holland 6'1" 196, Kahlef Hailassie 6'2" 202 or Steve Stephens 6'0" 195
Safety (boundary) : Brady Breeze 6'0" 195 or Nick Pickett 6'1" 197
Corner (boundary) : Demmo Lenior 5'11" 202, DJ James 6'0" 178
OLB (traditional): Lamar Winston 6'2" 227, Adrian Jackson 6'2" 233
Other notes: Gary Baker 6'3" 310 DT/NT if healthy should be featured a lot. Mase Funa 6'2" 260 towards the end of camp was featured at the ones.
A lot of these players will be mixed and matched depending on formation 2-4-5 (4-3-4 shell), 3-3-5 with a 4-2-5 shell, 3-4-4 were used most frequently used at BSU.
I am curious how Malzhan typically attacks this type of defense.

How do you think they’ll handle a run heavy QB and offense?
Assuming Nix is that type of QB...?

He will probably gas your two big DL men the pound the rock. He will try and break that D in the late 3rd quarter.

The same way you attack every defense in a Power Run HUNH offense...try to create leverage by finding a play that works and requires the D to over load to stop it...then use that leverage to create big plays. Oh yea, and don't turn it over.

If Oregon is going to beat Auburn it's because this unit comes to play. The offense should be really good.
The only question for me for Oregon is their defense, and that they have been unable to win away from home recently.
I read somewhere they were like 4-12 away from Autzen the last 3 years.
Have to remedy that if they want to be a contender.

It took me all of 20 minutes. I memorize numbers really easily.

I am guessing where he can get run heavy is with a traditional OLB like Winston instead of the spur and a guy like Mase Funa at stud. That would get the weight on the field. It sounds like Mase has been playing with the ones in situational packages.

quote:Mizzou tried this against Auburn. Granted, it was 2013 and Auburn boasted one of the most feared running games in college football history...but Auburn ran for over 500 yards and boat raced Mizzou.
2-4-5 (4-3-4 shell), 3-3-5 with a 4-2-5 shell
That being said, I have no idea what Auburn will look like this year.

I really wish this would have been a home/home series.

Neutral site games need to stop. Home and away is always better to most of us.

I worry about Whitlow to be honest. He looks like a tank. Scott in the middle is a tank. However, Popo is much less proven.

see I disagree. I dont really think its a fact Oregon's offense will be all that great. I think this is a low scoring affair compared to Auburn/Washington last year

As a general rule 1st games are rarely high scoring affairs...sometimes one team blows another out but it's unusual for both teams to put up a lot of points.
