Auburn is only capable of having sustained success when Alabama is wayyyy down. The best era of Auburn football coincided with Alabama being really bad and probation riddled from 2000-2007. 2010 was a flash in the pan stroke of luck, that won't be repeated for another 50-75 years. 2013 their luck ran out finally against FSU.

Dye went 6-6 vs Bama. Shug was bad vs Alabama.

Tell me which SEC coach had more wins against Bear Bryant than Shug. Let me help you there were none. Yes Shug was bad but everybody else was worse.

Pat Dye

Tommy Tuberville. He won games that coaches like Gus could never dream of winning (especially on the road). He has the highest record against Top 10 teams, doing exceptionally well in the later part of his tenure. He had beaten 9 of the last 10 Top 10 matchups including back-to-back consecutive wins against Florida in 2006 & 2007. His only issue was inconsistency. Loses at home to USF then goes on the road and beats #1 UF. In all fairness I don't think there has been a coach at Auburn that has been consistent in anything besides mediocrity. So, I'd say Tubs was the best.

Yeah, saying Shug was bad against Bear is like knocking Gus for not beating Saban enough.

Both were terrible save everyone else in the SEC who were also terrible against living legends.

And still more victories than Shug had over the Bear (5-13)

Because he coached against him more years than any other SEC coach.

I think one other thing to bear in mind with Shug is that both he and Bear coached before, during and after a massive transformation in the late 60s & early 70s as the SEC slowly integrated.

Bear struggled as well in '69 and '70. Got whooped by USC in the season opener. Lost to both LSU and Auburn those two years. But obviously he rebounded big time in the 70s and Bama was without a doubt rolling in the post integration era.

Shug stumbled in '73 and '75 but otherwise had an impressive set of seasons late in his career during a period of massive change. The longetivity and wins piled up over multiple decades are why Shug is worthy of a stadium named after him.

And beating Bear 3 out of 4 seasons (69, 70 & 72) is no small feat.

“Best American Hero” who was head coach at Auburn:

Ralph “Shug” Jordan.

Was at Normandy. Was at Sicily. Was at invasion of North Africa. And he was in combat at Okinawa.

Shug was the best man to ever coach at Auburn.

Let's not forget that he beat USC on the road in '71.Didnt take em long to recover.

I also think the "impact" of that game has been slightly exaggerated through the years.

Integration was beginning to happen anyway and I don't think it "pushed" it any faster.

In 25 years Shug won 1 SEC title. Hard to believe he has a stadium named after him with only 1 SEC title.

I'll take Shug.
You weren't born then, or were an uncoordinated kid. At least make this question not absurd. You won't see Alabama alums citing the Willson Chumlee era or whoever when the Cotton Gin was invented.

The Dye era was hard to beat. We lost some games because Dye seemed to want to physically whip his opponent, to the detriment of the out come, one UF game I remember specifically. Nevertheless, football being a physical sport was never lost on Pat Dye.

Back then, scheduling was unbalanced.

Shug went 10-0 in 1957 and 9-0-1 in 1958.

After Tech left conference, Auburn kept the game.
In 1972, AU beat Bama head to head, however, technically Bama had one more win(over Vandy) and same amount of losses so they “won” the SEC.

SEC teams did not play a standard number of games until late 1970s or early 1980s.

Shug was more of a man than any man I’ve seen that was a football coach.

Auburn was probably the best team in the SEC in 1972.

It did take a fluke plays to beat Alabama

And? It was still easier to win the conference or at least get a share of the title back then.I will say the SEC scheduling Gods weren't very kind to Auburn with Bama,UGA,UT and UF on their schedule every year I believe

No doubt a great individual.
