Auburn 2016 QB Question re: recruits quote

Auburn friends and family - did you happen to see this quote from Ahmonn Richards, 4-star wide receiver prospect? Seemed to say that Malzahn made it clear Sean White was the QB next year.
Do you guys think Gus thinks White is his guy next year or it will be a wide open competition?
quote:
“It went really well,” Richards said. “Coach Malzahn said he feels like I’m a top-five player. Not just at receiver, but just in the class overall. Watching my film and what I can do with the ball in my hands, he thinks I’m a player that can come in and contribute early.”
“They basically told me, the QB situation they had last year, with Sean White getting injured, they feel like this upcoming year he’ll really be on his A-game,” Richards said. “They really think he can be a great quarterback for them. They're trying to get receivers to surround him.”
Do you guys think Gus thinks White is his guy next year or it will be a wide open competition?

Wide open. I think White could be a very good qb if used a certain way (see OM or A&M style), but gus needs to match his offensive play calling to the qb he chooses.

That was my thought, which is why I was surprised when I read that quote specifically talking about Sean White. Of course, Richards might have just mentioned part of it, misheard it or something else.

With the WR class coming in, White is going to be the guy. Take away half of the WR drops, AU wins 2-3 more games. He's confident and isn't easily rattled. Sure he had a bad showing in the bowl game, but I think his knee took away from his concentration and ability. My main concern is how the OL adjusts to the losses. White will need better protection than a DT, but he's the best option to utilize the WRs AU will be stacked with.

Am I nuts for thinking that Jeremy Johnson might have a Jason Campbell-type turnaround?

I mean it's possible if he concentrates on his high stress coping abilities this off-season. He just doesn't seem confident enough to lead an SEC team. I honestly think the guy is too nervous and loses his ability to think clearly when stressed.

I wish you were right but it's not really a comparable situation. Campbell was actually decent in 2002 as a sophomore, he was just the victim of a complete offensive collapse in 2003 due to the botched OC hiring.
I don't ever like to talk bad about players but Johnson looked like he had never seen a football before at times last year.

Yea, the first half of the year Johnson looked like a guy who either (a) didn't understand the playbook or (b) froze up so badly that he either forgot route trees or just felt like he had to hurry up and get rid of the ball.
While I enjoyed it then, looking back now I feel bad for the guy. I hope he finds some sort of positive role going forward.

If Auburn beats LSU next year, watch out. I think they do pull the modest upset.

Said this on the AU board. I wouldn't read to much into it. They are trying to sell a top WR recruit on idea he could have a major role in our offense. White is the best passing option on the roster so they are selling that. I think we are still a long way from knowing who our QB in 2016 is just don't believe everything that comes out in recruiting

That seems to make the most sense. It also isn't a lie, because he very well could be the QB and he was for a large chunk of last year until he was injured, so it is a very plausible sell.

I wonder that myself. JJ reminds me of JC a lot. JC struggled mightily his first couple of seasons. I remember him getting destroyed up in Syracuse in 2002-2003 or so.

Gus saw what Clemson did against Bama's D. He got away from that style this year and it nearly cost him. Look for him to go back to that next year with a QB that is a threat to run the ball.

You guys got a Deshaun Watson redshirting this year that I haven't heard about yet?

Yeah,
it scares the shite out of me tbh.

Franklin will have a better chance to start than JJ.

He definitely could. I believe his issues with play are all mental. All of the hype damaged him IMHO.

Marshall wasn't a Watson talent either, and his stats were almost as impressive. It is that type style that has given Saban fits.

Yes, a spread style with an elite QB throwing and running well does give Saban (and everyone else in America, generally) fits.
But hey, we've just learned how to outscore those people, so whatevs.

Marshall ran that system well, but I do not think you would can him elite. It wasn't the spread part that Saban has a hard time overcoming, it is the pace. When he has a chance to change personnel and check off plays on D, he wins those battle 90% of the time. For some reason Gus got away from pace this year. I think QB had a lot to do with it.
