Except for that isn't how we defend the spread anymore. We've basically stopped trying to call the perfect play with the perfect personnel. Watson was great, made perfect throws and evaded the pocket as well as anyone since Manziel. I don't think anyone would have defended what he was doing that night.

A well run spread with a true dual threat at QB is harder to defend because it adds an extra man to account for running on every play. I think we have adapted and are better at defending it now than we were even 12 months ago, but if someone has a great trigger man in that system who can beat you running and make throws then it's almost impossible to totally stop. You just have to control the game momentum wise and outscore them. We finally learned that this season.

The SEC did not have anyone who could run the HUNH this year to put pressure on Bama's. Prescott was good, but he didn't have the talent around him. Dodds was capable, but he still has his issue. It almost worked for them. Ole Miss did the best within the league without having a true running QB. Back to Clemson, Watson was unstoppable because of the pace of the game. Unlike Gus, they ran fast every play (not just after first downs). Even Saban admitted his D was gassed midway thru the third quarter.

I wouldn't say it almost worked for Dobbs. They would have won the game 13-12. Their defense would have won that game.

I mean, like I said, you have to have a very solid O-line and a great talent at QB to put pressure on us with the HUNH these days. There aren't going to be a ton of teams that can do that. If they can, we will just have to break momentum and score points.

Watson was unstoppable because he was extending plays and drives (and he was throwing balls into spots the size of a catchers mit 15-30 yards downfield, mostly on the run). Our D-linemen were having to chase him all around the field on almost every play. Add that to the pace and that was why our linemen were gassed.

However, we had enough depth to hold serve in the 3rd and early 4th quarters with our young guys like Evans and Hand who came in and made plays that won the game. Clemson had us on the ropes and our young guys stopped them and gave our offense and special teams a chance to re-take the game. After we did that they were in catch up mode.

Long story short, Saban has finally accepted that he isn't going to shut down everybody we play. Sometimes he is going to have to just accept the flow of the game and win in that flow. We did that against Auburn in 2014 and we did it against Clemson. We tried to do it against Ohio State but came up short. He (and I) would rather smother everyone we play, but the game just isn't going to always go that way these days.

LOfreakinL

The definition of loser talk. Their players are still acting and talking like they won the football game. Weirdest shite I've ever seen.
