Why won't this be a good hire? Other than his crazy wife what are the glaring issues? Look at your team with Gus and look at this year's team. Isn't up the only direction?

They'll settle down and realize this eventually but not today.
I expect Gus to do about as well as Freeze has done so far at Ole Miss.
His main issue is recruiting and the assistants he hires.

He runs an offense that requires the quarterback to be the best player on the field to be succesful. Those don't grow on trees

I dont think that it is a bad hire. His offense isnt as gimmicky as a lot of people want to believe, and a lot of people seem to be blaming the discipline problems on him, but he wasnt the HC then. I think that with a good DC, this is a good hire.

Think there is a clause in Gus's new contract barring his wife from public speaking engagements?

I just think that more from a philosophical standpoint, it signals that the Auburn administration is being stubborn. They needed new blood. I definitely think Gus will be more successful than Chiz.

I couldnt care less about his wife, I did not think it was all that bad
personaly I just wanted a more authoritative coach. I just dont see that in GM, but who knows. I am indifferent at the moment

He's unproven. From recent history, you could attribute his success to something else, some other factor. We don't know if hes a great HC, but we do know he recruited KF, Pike, Mosely, etc.
I think AU fans are just tired of unknowns, especially when a proven badass with baggage is free (Petrino).
If Petrino wasn't on the free market, you might see less of a meltdown.
Speaking of which, I'm going back to freaking out

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking. Hire some competent coordinators and it'll be better than the previous regime.

It certainly helps to have Cam Newton, but his offenses have had success with pretty mediocre QBs too.

I don't think it's a terrible hire, just not great. I'll wait to see how he does. I think he can be very successful, but I also think he could be horrible. I'm mostly concerned about discipline and defensive toughness, two things he's not known for. We'll see how he does

This.
And I'm still waiting to see what team (if anyone) hires Petrino this year.
Somebody's gotta pull the trigger on him.
Wait, that didn't come out right...

As long as he can get good talent scouts on board and make the player work out and not be gigantic pussies, I think Malzahn will have us in great shape.

No proven history of discipline, winning, or being able to recruit/develop a decent QB (depending on how you classify the whole Cam situation, I don't know that I give him credit for finding a polished product).
That's the main things.

I think it can be a very good hire. Gus is a smart capable HC, he'll need a solid DC that he lets run that side similar to Spurrier though.
The biggest problem is the names that AU was targetting in this. Petrino, Jimbo Fisher, Jeff Fisher, Patterson etc...
Early on several of those likely would have taken the job, when JJ was more concerned about saving his job instead of solving internal divisions among the boosters the other coaches backed off. Pisses me off we had a strong shot at Jeff and we blew that up hardcore, all because a couple of boosters wanted to keep JJ instead of canning him like we need to.

QB recruiting won't be much of an issue.
Jeremy Johnson just said he will sign with Auburn now.
