Oliver sued, arguing that the N.C.A.A.’s ban on the use of lawyers by baseball players during contract negotiations violated state law in Ohio, his home state. In February, a judge agreed with him and issued an order barring the N.C.A.A. from enforcing the rule.

But he sued on the basis of an Ohio state law. I don't think Manziel will be able to cite Ohio State Law in his suit.

y'all are relentlessly myopic

The point wasn't that the case was precedence, it really has no bearing here, but that NCAA rulings still must stand up in court and damages are not minor.

In Manziel's case, a suspension without merit would do irreparable harm to his reputation. He is also someone whose potential earnings, particularly from endorsements where reputation is paramount, could be damaged well into 8 figures. No one's touching that without evidence because there are very real and large consequences here. Anyone suggesting otherwise is being willfully naive.

If the tape that ESPN saw exists as they say it does, and if the NCAA managed to get ahold of it they could suspend him without fear of litigation. There is enough circumstantial evidence with that tape. The NCAA doesn't need a smoking gun to suspend someone as we have seen many times over the years.

I hope this helped.

Oh bull fricking shite. You and every other LSU fan alive would celebrate every loss sans-Manziel with a euphoric haze not seen since Bama 2011

Can't speak for anyone else, but I truly don't care. Yall don't carry that kind of weight for me. Honestly I'd rather them beat Bama.

We shut down JM last year, so we'll be able to hold our own at least.

But A&M is literally the only other game Bama has to worry about, so I'd like to see JM give them a loss, although I don't think it happens with JM or not.

Pretty much this

No disrespect is meant but we don't care about A&M yet like we care about Alabama. A&M has the schedule to compete this year but even before Manziel's issues arose Vegas had your over/under at 9.5 games.

I think if you polled LSU fans 90% or more would rather you beat Bama than Bama beat A&M. If your team were to crash and burn this year I'm sure very few LSU fans would mourn your misfortune but I don't think there would be the glee that there was when Alabama lost to La Monroe or Utah.

If manziel was to sue, I would think he better be sure there is no evidence. At that point it would give the lawyers more ability to dig into records, force the brokers to turn over tapes, etc

Didn't the tape have JFF saying he wanted to be paid? I think just soliciting payment is against SEC rules. That's why Cam had to say he had no idea his father was trying to sell him off. Taking money isn't necessary.

I don't recall any articles mentioning that Johnny asked to be paid. Of course I could be totally wrong.

Most of my news has come from listening to local radio in Houston so I'll have to google a bit...

but lacked sufficient evidence

They have sufficient evidence.

There is a standard in the law that basically says: If someone defames you with information that is false, then you have a case.

But if someone defames you with information that is true, then you have no case.

The burden of proof is on the plaintiff. JFF would have to PROVE that he didn't take any money. Basically, he would have to prove a negative, which is almost impossible.

The NCAA is fine on this one. Don't try to turn this around and make it more complicated than it really is. JFF is the one who broke the rules, not the NCAA.

At least three agents have come forward now to say that they paid him for signatures. At least one of them has him on tape referencing the money.

That right there is probably way more evidence than they usually have in an eligibility case.

Looks like I heard it wrong although he does say that manziel alluded to previous payments:

quote:

"At one point, Schad heard a broker ask Manziel if he would take additional cash to sign with special inscriptions, but Manziel declined, indicating he had done that before and it led to questions.

ETA: obviously you can take that in various ways if you are inclined one way or the other.

Question: did OSU, USCe, USCw, or U of L hire Lightfoot to help with their investigations into their players mentioned in this autograph situation? Has it been reported that they hired any law firm about this?

Is it just A&M who hired an NCAA niche firm and still hasn't announced their player is clear?
