I've always thought they should do this. If I'm watching a kid play, it doesn't take away his amateur status in my mind if I know he gets a percentage of his jersey sales when he graduates.

That's a very slippery slope which would open the doors for lots of back-end deals. These are 18-21 year old kids. Let the one's that want to work get a p/t job if they want extra spending money. Put a cap on those earnings and force them to disclose compensation. Any lying/cheating would amount to an automatic suspension of xx games. College kids NOT having access to 10k/mo is definately a good thing. Who wants to guess what JFF has been spending on average over the past 12 months? Do we really want to find a way to provide more $$ to college kids that (for the most part) are not mature enough to handle it? We shouldn't use JFF's $$ needs as a standard for any normal college fb player.

This whole situation is a joke. The parents having to be told by the shrink to "limit" his autograph signings to 30 minutes/week. Are you friggin kidding me? The best thing for college football (and aTm) is for that douche and his family to move the frick on. They decided that they were bigger than aTm and college football long ago. A confirmed PA and body guards...are you kidding me? Stay your arse on campus with your team and find your security within that nucleus. One of his teammates needs to kick Uncle Nate's arse. They should then go over to JFF's condo and drag his arse out on the lawn and beat the shite out of him for being an embarassment to the team. That's exactly what the kid needs...like pronto.

I'm sure the booster money flowing the kids way is equal between Ohio State and Miami (OH) right now.

you're making my point for me.

if these kids get money for jersey sales, you are basically giving the huge boosters a free pass to get these kids money.

Well not part time, but summer jobs , off season etc. there are plenty of college students that work in the summer.

The complaint has always been , this is not allowed, so they can't go on dates or buy a pizza

As I understand it, a college athlete can have a part time or summer time job. Where the problems start is when an employer pays the player cash under the table, or in the case at OU a few yrs back, the players never actually did any work. A friend in Lafayette was his company's "bag man" for paying John Williams cash under the table to match what he earned at his hourly rate.Another friend's family owned a local grocery store & one of the sons was designated to provide JW with prime beef steaks, a case full, once a wk. You can have all the rules in the world but if a kid wants to put his hand out & take extra benefits, there will always be someone there to fill it up.

Obviously you don't roll this out without some significant regulation and oversight. The fact of the matter is that with the EA lawsuits and others facing the NCAA, they are likely going to be forced to share the profits or slowly die out.

Clowney and Lattimore did the same thing. Making an example of Manziel is not going to solve this problem. The guy draws all kinds of bad attention to himself, including attention for doing things that everyone does.

BCS programs are already complaining about too much regulation and oversight... what we're talking about here just creates more paperwork and crap for university's compliance departments, coaches, and AD personnel.

Beyond him tweeting after getting a parking ticket, I do not think that Johnny has done anything that makes him a "douche." Maybe his over exposure in the media annoys everyone, so douche is the first thing that comes to mind...

BTW...I don't think that we will find a bunch of takers on the p/t job thing. These are kids that, for the most part, have grown up without knowing what it's like to work for $$. Anyone think that Jonnyboy cut the grass or had chores around the Manziel house? Maybe he also cut the uncles grass because he was too busy breaking down the 5kilos of coke. Step back and look at the big picture...who is everyone trying to protect here? This kid needs a wake-up call or his dad's predictions will undoubtedly come true. And i'm not talking about jail either...

I haven't read the NCAA by-laws, but I would imagine at least half of those regulations are stupid. Just because there is asinine regulation now doesn't have to mean additional useful regulation would be a bad thing. It means the NCAA should be working to make the system work better.

Saying he can't take classes like normal students because he doesn't like the crowds then the very next day he's on Bourbon Street for Mardi Gras?

Or saying he can't wait to leave College Station on twitter? Basically saying FU to all the fans who worship the ground he walks on.

Oversleeping and then getting kicked out of the Manning camp then going out and partying the same night, getting kicked out of a frat party at UT, getting arrested last year for a fake ID while at a bar and drinking while underage, threatening to transfer if the coach benched him. Take your pick.

LMAO. Standing up a bunch of 9 year olds waiting to see you at a camp while having Daddy lie about it (Dehydration I tell you) while you go out and party the night before and after is plenty all by itself.

The attention whoring is enough by itself (nobody told him to role play his opening pitch in SD, post pics of him flashing cash, get in endless twitter fights, putting on longhorn tattoos blah blah blah).

Did you read the ESPN article with his dad (Papa Douche). Gotta buy Johnny everything otherwise he will do something stupid; he cannot control his temper and must throw clubs all around like a 3 year old when things don't go all his way; swearing at Grandma - just par for the course.

And just in case we are not clear yet - if you drink keystone light while wearing a pink shirt at a frat party - that is about the most guaranteed douche you can be.

But you are right, solely a parking ticket and *sniff* *sniff* walk a day in my shoes is the only incident.

You guys are remarkable in your blind defense of this kid. In a few years, you will look back at this and laugh at yourself for making such defenses

Edit: And that is the past 5 months. I am ignoring the multiple arrests etc... that preceded the end of last season.

Ill agree that the tweet had some bad taste, but I think it was blown out of proportion. He was clearly intoxicated and was upset about a parking ticket... I really dont think he is a douche, but I suppose that is my opinion. Biased? Yes, but I do not think he is a douche.
