re: As a college football fan, you have to hope Devonta Smith is drafted over Ja'Marr Chase

Oh they will sign them. And then give them incentives to continue to play ...

Especially since Chase's competitiveness on the field has never been questioned. This will be clear very soon of course. Chase will be SPECIAL at the NFL level on day one. And Smith will be very good and worth where he goes as well.
I would be careful on this one, to me it depends on where they are drafted and who is at QB. Receivers drafted later in the first round tend to land better situation at QB.

LSU's quarterbacks averaged around 312 yards passing per game.
5 games under 300yds
2 games over 400 that padded those stats
Not a single receiver over 800yds
The Burrow was the best QB LSU has probably ever had.
Last year you had Brennan and two freshmen.
Brennan was not good.

Put up some pretty good numbers to be "not good."

Brennan average 370 yds/game and 3.7 TD/game.
I'm not saying he is or isn't a good QB but he was able to move the ball and score. The receivers would have been just fine with him all season.

it shows that NFL teams don't give a damn if you quit or not and we'll see other top tier juniors do the same.
What’s Tyler Shelvins draft stock look like? He was a borderline first rounder coming into the season.
Jamar is a freak show athlete with no baggage and he set records against first round corners.
That’s rare.

Against Miss State (good defense, I'll give you that), Vandy and Missouri.
And he was 1 and 2 in those games.
My 17yr daughter could pass for 337yds against Vandy.

He won’t be though. Chase is far superior.

I havent paid much attention to the top 4 picks needs, but all signs are from my Bengals at 5 are that if Sewell isn't there we are drafting Chase.
I personally would rather see us trade down and get extra picks. Whatever help we can get to protect Burrow needs to priority one two and fricking three. OL and the secondary are where we need to focus.

Could you link legitimate source that had Shelvins as a first rounder before the season?

I will agree it wasn't the best competition but LSU also was returning very little experience, had no running game, a garbage offensive line, and they were Brennan's first starts.
The numbers he put up were "good" even if they were against directional schools all things considered.

The two games he lost, LSU's defense gave up 40+ points. Hard to win in that situation.

Perhaps A&M should give her a scholarship then since Kellen Mond had only like 180 yards against them.

If Cincinnati doesn't draft multiple linemen to try and protect Burrow there is no hope for the franchise

I think guys will play though if they think their team is in the running for a title though.
Which is also unhealthy for the sport because how many teams are in the running for a title in a given year? A dozen at most, often less than that.

LSU had 5 games with over 300 yards passing. The 5 games under 300 yards was an average of 252. But yes, the higher passing games numbers help. That how averages work.

Well, when your leading receiver who had just shy of 800 yards quits after game 7, that kind of skews the "no receiver with over 800" yards thing. Once Marshall left the team, Boutte had 500+ the last three games.

but imagine catching high slant pass over the middle against Auburn or Alabama late in season when you're a Top 5 pick.
He needs to be in an intramural flag football league then. My gosh, we have become a bunch of soft arses!!

I can see how one could see it that way but the counter is that Devonta undoubtedly made himself a ton of money by playing in 2020 and coming back for his 4th season.
I think circumstances are just that: circumstances. Chase's were different than Smith's. People thought Smitty was a product of a great QB and/or deep WR corp even after his great 2019 season. He dispelled those questions in a big way especially when Waddle went down and he went on a Sherman-esque warpath against any secondary he crossed. Chase had about as good of a sophomore year as you could hope to have as a WR. There was really nowhere to go but down and the offensive situation around him was shaky. You add in the fact that he may have family that were high risk for COVID or whatever and you arrive at a great player deciding to hang em up.
