Are you seriously making the argument that employees shouldn't be able to quit a job when they feel like it?

At any rate, it's a stupid argument. They have a contract. They can quit, but they can't play elsewhere while under contract. This is nothing more than hand wringing.

So we're defining Chase as employee at LSU also? I know referring to a future NFL, but have absolutely no problem kids deciding to do what they feel like is best for their situation. Nobody predicted Brennan would get hurt, but imagine catching high slant pass over the middle against Auburn or Alabama late in season when you're a Top 5 pick.

The amateurism case before the Supreme Court right now is going to have a huge impact on the College game. HUGE. In this process, more and more young people will skip years of college play (or skip college altogether) to protect their bodies/investment.

You think the NFL change their rules and accept players right out of HS?

We are always going to appreciate a guy who stays and competes over a guy who is "only about himself". So Devonta will get much deserved respect for that. Even factoring in the weirdness of Covid. But you'd have to be borderline nuts to take Smith over Chase. Especially since Chase's competitiveness on the field has never been questioned. This will be clear very soon of course. Chase will be SPECIAL at the NFL level on day one. And Smith will be very good and worth where he goes as well.

I think the NFL is going to have a development league soon enough. It appears inevitable

Why would it be better for the game? That doesn’t make any sense. Oh and if I’m a Gm I’m drafting chase 1st all day

Having a player quit before the season and still go in the top 5 is going to be awful for college sports.

I know there are multiple players on both LSU and Bama that are watching where Chase is drafted. I'm sure there are MANY more.

Bosa, Chase, etc ... This is just the beginning, and it is going to get worse. Hopefully if players can get paid for their "likeness" it will help to discourage this behavior

There aren't that many players that can sit out and still go at #6, which is where I think Chase is going. Not enough to hurt the sport.

I disagree.... both made decisions based on their draft stocks at the time. It worked out for both of them. Chase is a special talent and most would agree had nothing to prove by playing another season.

You're wrong.

Chase didn't play for one reason only. He didn't have a quarterback to throw the ball to him.
Burrow was an amazing QB. One of the best to ever play.

Had Chase played it would have only hurt him because his stats would have suffered.

I told one of my buddies earlier today I almost hope Chase isn't a top 5 pick. If he is, that sets a dangerous precedent that players can sit out a year and have it not affect their draft. I always hear the counter-argument that COVID and opt-outs are a unique circumstance and won't happen going forward, but I just have a feeling this was a test run for what will become the norm for elite prospects. That would be terrible for the sport.

I hate opt outs so I respect Devonta for what he did and hate Jamarr Chase for what he did. I agree it sets a precident for future players to quit on games.

Would it really discourage that behavior? They don't need to be playing college football to get paid for their likeness. The only thing that would discourage quitting would be to make them contract employees, but that would open an even larger can of worms that wouldn't be good for the sport or a sustainable model for college athletic departments.

I agree wholeheartedly with this and it is why I believe a wholesale change is going to be needed in college athletics.

I don't think advertisers are going to pay a player to sit out the season. I guess they could, but I'm sure they will have plenty of "incentive" to play

LSU's quarterbacks averaged around 312 yards passing per game.

Exactly. Never fails to amaze me how little common sense people have when it comes to sports, especially "amateur" ones that make millions.

The only players that are going to see legitimate money from their likeness are truly elite players. You don't think Nike and other companies like that won't be signing elite college prospects to shoe deals because they may be sitting out a season?
