I remember "experts" on ESPN saying we'd be too fast for Nebraska since Sun Devil Stadium has a grass field...
In the first quarter of that game, Nebraska wasn't close to covering UF receivers. UF dropped some passes, yet still led at the end of the quarter. During the TV time out, their DC went to Osborne and said he couldn't cover UF playing it straight and had to blitz. Osborne agreed. Nebraska brought huge pressure, UF didn't have the shotgun at the time, and that was ballgame for UF's offense. UF with the shotgun destroys that Nebraska defense.
People forget three things about that game.
Lawrence Philips was fished out of jail to play in the game.
UF had no shotgun.
UF's starting defensive front was injured.
With the shotgun and a healthy defense, UF rolls that Nebraska team. Experts were right, they just didn't know UF's defense was injured. That was the big key because that kept Nebraska's offense on the field and UF's offense off the field.
Long time UF radio guy, Larry Vittel, saw it in practice before the game and knew that was ballgame due to the injuries. He recapped that on his radio show many times over the years before retiring. It's not a coincidence that Nebraska scored 7 points in the first quarter and caught fire in the second quarter when UF had no depth on defense. No one wants to hear that, but it's the truth. That Nebraska team is the most overrated national champion of all time because of how that Fiesta Bowl went. The elite passing teams with a shotgun would have put 50 on that defense. 96 UF, the USC teams, 08 UF, 08 OU, and many others would have hung 50 on that Nebraska team easily. I shutter to think what 2019 LSU would have done to them.

Football was meant to be played on grass.

Spurrier FINALLY started putting Wuerffel in the shotgun after the 96 FSU game in Tally.

We had a few hurt on Saturday due to that damn artificial shite.
Dayton Wade was sure sliding all over the place.

It's not just the injuries that are a problem.
Artificial turf is around 40-70 degrees hotter than ambient air temps.
That means this past Saturday, on what should have a perfectly pleasant day in Nola, the players were playing on a surface that averaged between 140 and 150 degrees.

My buddy has been tracking temps this summer on synthetic turf vs natural grass. He's posted a few time with side by side Comparisions. Most recent post:
102° outside
140° at grass level on synthetic field
96° at grass level on native bermuda

Bump in honor of Harry's thread. This needs to be addressed.

It’s gotta go. I feel like there are more devastating injuries on it vs grass.
As an aside, my son from last weeks game has melted turf on his cleats. That’s ridiculous.

It gets ridiculously hot compared to grass.

If any ground needs replacing it should start in Knoxville with that sorry arse cow pasture field Tennessee has.

It sure does. The district even moved the games back an hour in hopes of allowing the field to cool off just a little bit. He’s. RB so he’s on that turf a good bit.
He’s got gloves and arm sleeves so he might reduce the burns and cuts just from the position. The melted plastic on the cleats was something I’d not seen before (I played on the old arse turf that was more of carpeted cement).

The game was at Tulane.
There is no excuse for an open air stadium in New Orleans (along with the entire Deep South) to have an artificial turf field. It’s an abomination.

This alone should be reasonable cause for concern.
