Yes that was a bad loss to a Memphis team that went 5-5 in the Great Midwest conference. That made the path much easier to the elite eight until they got destroyed by Cincinnati.

After we joined the SEC, it actually took me several years before I realized that other SEC fans think this way. Football was different, because it actually determined the conference champion. I know some have said it's the same way with basketball, so I guess that means we're all still in the running.

A conference title is more important in football because you have very little room for error. Lose games and you won't make it to a playoff.
Basketball plays a lot more games and so a team can get hot or cold. A conference champion may peak during the season but go cold and lose in the early rounds of the NCAA tournament. Another team that doesn't win conference but didn't peak during the season may get hot and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
It is like a reset when the regular season ends and the NCAA tournament begins. The plate is clean and any team can win it.

Yeah, I agree. I was just mocking those who claim that Arkansas didn't win the SEC in '92 and '94, since we didn't win the SECT.

Maybe in the SWC where pre-1992 the majority of your basketball history consists of only having to beat Texas to win a conference championship is a conference championship not a big deal. However, when you share a conference with the greatest college basketball program of all time and many great teams your school had didn't win a conference title because of that program you might appreciate why a regular season conference title is a big deal.
To highlight how rare it is, how many regular season SEC titles has Arkansas won since you joined the league in 1992?

We won two but Nolan was measured on how successful he was in the NCAA tournament. If he only won conference titles and couldn't reach the sweet sixteen then he would be fired and I would guarantee that Frank Broyles would do it.
Arkansas was a much better basketball program and were easily top 10 overall. Yes Kentucky has better history but Nolan and his teams didn't let it intimidate them. Nolan has a winning record against Duke. Had Nolan kept it going, Arkansas would have been one of the best basketball programs of all time. But internal conflict destroyed that and the decline began.

If the CFP expands like the NCAAt, I’d agree. If it were to only expand to 6-8 teams, it still means something.
In basketball, conference titles took a hit when the tournament super expanded. In the 40’s-70’s, conference titles meant something. Since expanding to 64 teams, I think it’s made it less important, but overall made the sport more exciting and fan friendly.

It is the same deal in baseball. We made multiple CWS apperances recently and didn't win the conference. I don't see any of our fans bitching to DVH on why he can't win more SEC conference titles.
