Arkansas fans keep saying that Auburn has saved them money by us hiring Chad Morris.

I don't get it. Didn't Arkansas fire Chad and are therefore still paying him money regardless for a buyout?

Now Auburn is paying him too.

How is this saving their University money exactly? Maybe I am lost.

Buyouts are typically reduced by the amount of the new salary. I think that's why Butch Jones was just fine being an analyst at bama

Yes I think he would have to take another HC job to save them money. Not sure though.

Makes since. Think about a coach getting fired at Arky getting that buyout and his next gig getting Fired and having that buyout too. Makes since it would be reduced by the next gig.

Goodness! How do people not understand how this works? I’m sure Gus’s contract is the same way. When you guys fire him the pay from his new job will offset what Auburn has to pay. All contracts are different. Some are dollar for dollar some are less.

So, he was let go BY Arkansas with a contract remaining and is now free to do whatever he pleases (and thus took an offer at AU). This is not a "buyout" or reduction then, unless I just really fail to see how contracts work in that capacity. I am also certainly not an expert on these matters either, so forgive me for my lack of understanding.

I think that that would only apply to Coaches who have taken another job while still actually being associated with the previous University.

Arkansas flat out fired Morris before the season ended and therefore owes him the rest of his contract no matter what, and he is now free to pursue other endeavors afterwards.

Not trying to cause a fight with my Arkansas baws. Just interested in this particular situation now that he is on our staff.

Wait! Is this for real why he’s an analyst at Bama?! That’s insanely AHoleish of Saban and Jones. Impressive.

I’m sure auburn got him for nothing because he knew Arkansas is going to pay him anyways.

Contracts do not allow coaches to do as they please! Just like unemployment they have to seek employment equal or as close as they can find to what they had. A contract guarantees you what you were owed for a certain time frame. So if he is promised 3.5 million for 4 years that’s what he will get. So it could be Arkansas paying it all if he can’t get a job or Arkansas and Auburn paying it. It could have been Arkansas and espn if he had got a job at Espn.

It's the same thing Bielema did with the Patriots. Took an unpaid position for a year. Reason the university isn't paying him.

That is what I am thinking. He is literally being double-paid at this point.

I am sure that he could have sat out a while with the Arkansas contract, but Gus offered him a job relatively immediately after being "fired."

I can certainly see the confusion.

Good for Morris though if things worked out for the better lol. Must be nice.

That’s how we underpaid mike MacIntyre our DC last year. He wanted Colorado to pay as much as possible.

Why is this even being discussed? Every single coach has a contract where if terminated they have 2 responsibilities: 1) Look for a employment similar to what they currently have 2) Except compensation that is a fair market value

Whatever arkie owes Chad the amount will be reduced by whatever Auburn pays him.

There are some exceptions.

Champ got UF to agree to pay him the entirety of his contract. When he was at Auburn and his 1st 2 seasons at USCe he made the money from those contracts plus what UF owed him.

Sometimes coaches get up front payouts. Gus has this in his contract...if we send him packing we owe him X up front then the rest is paid to him. If he took another job it would offset what we owe him.

After Arkansas fired him, they owed Morris $2.46 million per year until Dec 31, 2023 (70% of his original contract). Auburn will pay him a salary (S), so now Arkansas owes Morris $2.46 million - (S) until the end of 2023. That’s how 95% of these contracts are structured
