History shows Auburn will likely have a good year.

Going back all the way to 1979 (37 seasons), Auburn has never gone three consecutive seasons without finishing in the AP Top 25. Since they finished #22 in 2014, this would make their 2nd consecutive season if they fail to finish ranked.

Quite possibly one of the most unbelievable stats around is this: When Auburn goes a season or two without finishing in the Top 25, they break it by having an very strong season, with an average finish of #7 in the AP.

1980/1981: unranked... 1982: #14
1985 unranked... 1986: #6
1991/1992: unranked... 1993: #4
1998/1999: unranked... 2000: #18
2001 unranked: 2002: #14
2003: unranked: 2004: #2
2008/2009: unranked... 2010: #1
2011/2012: unranked... 2013: #2
2015: unranked... 2016: ?

The last 3 times Auburn came back from a stretch of not finishing in the Top 25, they came back with a Top 2 finish.

So history says Auburn will in all likelihood have a Top 10 finish either this year or next year. So the question is, is it this season? Or does it happen next season?

I think Auburn Beats Clemson....Home, since the fans will be leaving mid-third quarter from the beating they are taking.

That "Orange Out" was brilliant...makes us feel like it is a home game.

I do not like the thought of Clemson playing in Jordan-Hare at night opening weekend.

Despite being down, Auburn is still Auburn and therefore will recruit well.

However, Kevin Steele's defense up against a very very good offense headed by Deshaun Watson is not good for Auburn.
For those who don't remember, Kevin Steele was the DC at Clemson up until he let West Virginia put 70 points on us in the Orange bowl. He's really not a good DC.

And while I believe everyone on this board is severely underestimating Brent Venables' DC capabilities (he rebuilt the D last year and took it to the natty), I believe that week one will not prove a strong showing from the Clemson D.
That's going to be where Auburn has a chance - if they can take advantage of a week 1 rookie Defense.

I think Clemson will win. But I don't think its a sure lock.

This guy is both logical and reasonable.

Auburn can win, but likely won't win. Clemson will score, but probably won't look like the well oiled machine that ended the 2015 season.

It's hard for me to see it too. But what great year for Auburn did it ever look like it would be good during the preseason? Here is where Auburn started in the rankings in each season they won the SEC West (as well as 1993):

2013- Auburn did not receive a single vote in the Preseason Top 25 (45 teams did)
2010- Auburn started #22
2004- Auburn started #17
2000- Auburn started #30
1997- Auburn started #17
1993- Auburn started #42

The average puts them outside the Top 25, at around #29.

A common link in each of those seasons was a dynamic if not NFL talent QB. SW is better than some on here give him credit for but I doubt he can win more than 8-9 games and likely won't beat true title contenders. The only unknown for me is how much rebuilding Clemson did on D. I know they had guys to replace last year, but they replaced the 2015 D with a lot guys who had already played a bunch of snaps. They also had several NFL grade players on that D. This D has less snaps and less obvious NFL grade players. That is Auburn's only real hope. Maybe we move the ball and control the clock and the D makes enough plays to sneak this game out.

In the end I suspect it will be closer than most think and Auburn fans will be thinking man if we'd only converted that 3rd and 4 and that 3rd and 6 late, etc...we just don't have the horse on O.

Clemson has lost a lot of NFL talent off their D the past 2 yrs, I think Auburn will keep the game competitive but Watson will ultimately be the difference in a 7-10 pt W by Clemson.

If the Gus Bus comes out with an offense firing on all cylinders, they have a very good chance of winning the game. You never know what you get with Auburn, when that offense is rolling, its hard to slow it down.

I picked Auburn but if I didn't refuse to pick against Alabama ever I would have picked USC as well.

Win or lose....I mostly care that the Auburn players personally make this a hostile, unpleasant and yes, painful 3+ hour experience for the Clemson players they will remember for the rest of their lives.

And the fans can do their part by ingesting liquid courage for 8 - 12 hours prior to kickoff and then screaming at the top of their lungs whenever our D is on the field and Watson is under center.

I really look forward to Kam Pettway, Braden Smith, Tre Williams and others knocking the absolute living daylights out of the South Carolina visitors.

Let's get it on!
