After being hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Urban Meyer has begun assembling his coaching staff. Now, he has reportedly added former Texas head coach Charlie Strong as an assistant.
According to Brett McMurphy of Stadium, Strong will be coming down to Jacksonville as a defensive assistant. McMurphy thinks Strong will take on the role of linebackers coach.
Most recently, Strong was a defensive analyst for Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama. Previously, Strong was the head coach at Louisville, Texas, and USF. HIs combined record as a college head coach is 74-53

I’d take that to mean that rumors of Pete Golding being poached by Texas are not highly likely because Strong would’ve been the next man up at DC.

Got mixed feelings because I was kinda hoping they’d poach him and thought Strong would do well in the DC role.

People who think Strong is or was going to be DC need to stop paying attention to people like Crimson Bozo.

He was never going to be such. He doesn't run the same kind of systems as Saban and it wouldn't be a good fit. Not to mention it's been like 12 years since he was a DC and the offenses he played against were nothing like they are today.

It's very simple when it comes to the defense: This is Saban's defense. Whoever he brings in will run Saban's defense the way Saban likes it. He values differing opinions and such, but at the end of the day it's Saban's defense.

When Saban started getting smaller guys for the spread and HUNH, he didn't bring in a new coordinator. He did it himself and the DC's adjusted to what he wanted.

Couldn’t Strong have done that had he been made DC (which obviously isn’t happening, but still)?

it does seem like a place where you can take your buyout money from your last job;
rehab your image;
rehab inner pussy out of you while saban demands more;
learn that there is a way to get more out of 17-22 year olds:
take rehabbed self to better paying job;

but still lose to saban later.

Of course, it's just not what he's experienced in and isn't his general philosophy.

He may teach them everything they know, but not everything he knows.

With the recruiting classes and talent Bama has, Saban could literally Coach the entire team by himself and win.
